Mathematically, it would be 8^3. But the rooms should not be part of the permutation. Since it's 8 combinations in each room, it's not as if you could could combine the rooms as a fourth element into the combinations...or am I approaching this with the wrong logic?

When I asked if I was right in my calculation, I referred more to whether or not if there were more possible position of wheels than I discovered.

EDIT: Looking at the other rooms, I realize that the available objects for fiddling are different, so that killed my calculation. And I am wondering if you are right your comment about how the rooms might factors in. Because if the positions of the wheels and levers in the other rooms mattered...there'd be heck of a lot more combinations. For example:

Room 1: wheel 1 crooked, wheel 2 straight
Room 2: wheel 1 straight, wheel 2 straight, lever up
Room 3: lever 1 up, lever 2 up, lever 3 up

The Wocky turns back to you and nods. "Thanks for your help in getting rid of him. I can't believe what a sourpuss he turned out to be. Well, the club charter states that the club's Vice President -- that's me -- becomes President in case the President can no longer fulfill his duties. Sorry if you thought that job would go to you, but that's not how it works." She shrugs.

So much for being president. And I bought all those robes.

No, the result does not depend on your choice of which room you're in. The switches in the other rooms matter (or it probably does). In other words, it's not (one of 2 states)^(each of 3 valves) * (one of 3 rooms), but ((one of two states)^(each of 3 valves))^(each of 3 rooms).

Actually, now that I look again, the first room only has 2 valves, so it's 2^2 * 2^3 * 2^3, or 256.

Nothings changed with them.

Although what I find weird is: if it was the blue quiggle running the astronomy club, why didn't he want us to join his other clubs?

You're completely right now that I've looked through the rooms. That's going to be a pain trying to do 256 combinations...maybe I'll hit the right one early on :P How long did it take you guys?

before i could move on, 3 of the 4 tanks had filled with water, only the one in the leftmost room was empty when i pulled the final switch

I saw this on the NeoBoards, and it worked for me, so here's hoping it works for you as well:

All your valves will be "straight", meaning they'll all look like a + sign, not an X. In the room to the left, you should just have the two valves pointing straight. In the main room, the first you come to when you go through the door, both valves should be straight, and the lever needs to point up. In the third room, what I believe to be the varying room, you have to alternate up down up, or down up down. In my case, it was UP-DOWN-UP, and then they rejoiced that I fixed the plant. Hope this helps you :)

Well, I just figured out what at least one of the "failure" states is for me:

All valves open (the arms make a straight +), all switches up.

Just a note, the lights on the ceiling of the HoH are already out before you find the constellation. On a whim I checked with the janitor on my way to the observatory and the message had already changed to the current lights-out rant.

Hah! I was just planning on writing out the first 64 combinations (for Room 1 Wheel 1 Straight and Wheel 2 Straight) and was just setting everything back to normal so I can have a structured test, and I got it! How cute. :P

Just in case someone missed it, this is what I got with all valves open, all switches up:

Altador Water Distribution Plant

OH NO! You opened too many pumps and valves, and Altador has been completely flooded!

...or it would have been, if the plant hadn't been built with automatic safety features that prevent exactly this scenario from occurring. The plant has been reset to the way it was when you started messing with it. Whew!

Can't Find the Necklace :(

Sat May 13, 2006 3:44 am

I have found my constellation, and clicked on the necklace, but it is not in my inventory :o Does anyone know where the necklace would be -- I don't think it was stolen, because I haven't noticed any bad RE's -- will I be able to continue with the plot?

aw no that didn't work, thank you for trying to help though! LOL, though I have flooded Altador about 7 times though :P

I don't know, there just seems like there would be some clue as to the combination around somewhere, or at least it would be nice if there were. This whole thing just seems so complicated to end up being random. But then again it seems like a lot of people have gotten it randomly so I don't know. This is just annoying!
