Another thought: I always thought that "Meerca" was a play on words of the meercat. Even though meercats don't have long tails, they stretch to have their heads as high as possible when looking out for predators.

The Yurble has, to me, always been vaguely John Goodman-like.

And I think the Ogrin resembles a zebra slightly more than a giraffe.

Okay, I need to get something off my chest here:

The Ruki is ONLY a mantis. Why do people insist it's an ant or mantis/ant hybrid? It has the wings of a mantis, simplified arms of a mantis, and entire body arrangement of a mantis.

The only similarity it has to an ant is the fact that ants are such generic-looking insects that almost any overly cartoonified insect can pass for one.

But then there's the fact that Donna specifically said it was mantis-based.
