This is just cruel to all dial-up or slow loaders, it's bad enough we have 2 sets of freakin ads on the site (mind you, I've seen a couple that SHOULD NOT be seen by anyone).
We need HTML map backs, no matter how 'crappy' the look to you, we like the HTML map.
The ads are ridiculous. I was leaving them alone on my secondary account (which I use IE to play), but they were making it so pages wouldn't even load. I blocked them using the instructions
here ("text editor" = Notepad), which worked great. On my main account I've been using Firefox + Adblock since the huge banners came out. It's the only way my five-year-old computer can handle the site (plus, the site is much prettier ad-free).
The flash maps are very annoying, too. Even with DSL they take a while to load. I selected HTML maps for a reason!

I think, using the CSS Style Sheet, you're not actually blocking the ads, just hiding them, so it will still slow your machine down

Even so, it's made it so my pages are no longer hanging and refusing to load, so I'm happy. I barely use that account, anyway.

OK. If we all want to send a message ti the editorial for the HTML option.
TNT,
The new maps, The shops page, and Lost Desert, and the mini-worlds force people to use Flash to access them. For people with slower computers, flash is quite a hassle, and takes a long time to load. Even with DSL speed lines, Flash takes a while to load. Are there any plans to add HTML maps for these places?

I completely agree; we definitely need HTML maps too. I have dial up (sadly) and the maps take forever to load. In fact, sometimes they just don't load at all. Then I have to refresh the page which is just frustrating, and just as often I just close the browser instead. I know I don't have much patience, but please TNT, give us HTML maps! I too will send a message to the editorial; hopefully someone will listen to us!
Plus, I don't even understand the advantages of flash. I have tried out the flash maps but really they seem just the same as the HTML ones to me, only they take longer to load. Obviously I'm missing something though, perhaps some extra animations or something...

WOW! I'm so glad I'm not the only person who misses having the HTML map options for the new maps! When I first posted this thread, I was afraid that other players would just say, "What's the big deal?". I'm glad to see that others' miss the HTML option too.
I've sent in so much feedback, as well as letters to the editor, that I'm afraid TNT will think I'm spamming if I continue to complain. But I really, really, really miss the HTML maps. I hope that Snarkie takes a look at this thread and takes pity upon us!

I myself have no problem with loading times, but I can see how this effects a large portion of the players, so I'm going to <s>spam</s> (;)) send them an e-mail or two to suggestions and editorial for HTML maps.

I noticed that too and was about to say something, because my firefox is blocking all things dealing with .swf or flash. (At one time I did set it to block *.swf to block ads, which is extrememly effective

But even after I thought I removed that from the filter, firefox has not forgotten.)
So some areas in neopia I cannot access unless i resort to ie. Then I see the stupid ads.

The entire website is biased toward people on fast broadband connections. I honestly don't think they give a rip about dial-up users.

Something to consider is that those portions of the site with the Non-HTML maps are somewhat unaccessable to those with disibilites. The ALT tag they use on the image maps provide the needed text to navigate properly in such a case.

I recently changed from dial-up to cable. I can't even imagine trying to load some of these pages on dial-up. Some of them take quite a bit of time even with cable. The main haunted woods and maraqua in particular take a very long time to load and I am one of those people who clear their internet cache, history, etc. at least once or twice a day. Doesn't matter if I'm using IE or FF -- they're just slow and sometimes don't want to load at all.
There's the option in site preferences and at the bottom of the map pages to choose whether you want to use flash or html. Why do we have those options if the new maps won't work or work right in html. Especially the "static" maps like shops, lost desert, etc. ... I just don't see the need for them to be flash. The preloader is annoying and it truly IS slower regardless of your internet.
I also miss the alt tags, I have found them to be very helpful.

The whole purpose of your cache is to store images, files, etc. on your comp so they load faster next time you see them

I had the exact some problem after I installed ad block with FF. I finally gave up and removed Adblock, and uninstalled then reinstalled Firefox. I have had no problems since then.

I'm not so sure that TNT even gives a whoot about players with disabilitiies. As I recall when the banner ads were introduced, a lot of people pointed out to Adam the difficulties being encountered by those with neurological disabilities, such as epilepsy, migraines, multiple sclerosis, etc. (Players with these conditions often experience nausea, horrendous headaches and blurred vision due flash advertisements.) And I don't think Adam ever responded to any of these concerns, at least not here on PPT.
I'm hoping that the reduction in page "hits" on the Main Shop and Lost Desert pages will encourage them to consider adding simple HTML maps.
