Hopefully someone who started playing before Feb. 2000 will add more to this. In the early days of Neopets, there were loans. I believe they were abolished in January 2000, a mere 3 months after Neopets went live. There were big problems with them and having people pay them back. There is infor about this in the Neopian Times.

In short- it has been tried, but was taken away because peole were taking advantage of it.

Okay well what if like someone said before that you have to be playing for a year to get a loan? o_O There might be havoc about people having a lot of np and newbies finding out and doing stuff on trading posts etc!

Hey Pat, where are you and general nonsense going? I guess to the festivities of sophisticos!

I thought they did have loans. . . back when interest was still added automatically and you didn't have to collect it. There's an editorial comment about this. . .forget why they decided to do away with it.

Theyt did use to have loans. They removed them after a few months due to abuse. They have said multiple times they won't be coming back in any shape or form. End of discussion. :P

To easy to abuse.. People will just create many accounts and get money. Unless... you must pay a deposit for them. For eg...

Pay 100k = Loan 150k
Pay 1m = Loan 1.25m

^ This method however can still be abused...

Another way is...

Put a deposit of an item. How much you can loan depends on the item. If the item has a est value of 100k, you may loan 20k. Which is 25% ( i think ). After a certain amt of time (like 1mth) if you do not come claim back your item, it will be GONE. Like a pawnshop. I think so far this is best idea. :/

Some possable solutions to abuse:

-have tickets/credits that can only be used on the account they were made on.

- you have 10 hours to use the tickets or they dissapear.

- you can only spend tickets in neopian shops.

- you have 20 days before they start withdrawing money from your account proportional to what you took out.

Something like that anyway... i know it limits alot but its the only way i can see.

That's a good idea as well as the other persons! :)
But if you had a 10k loan and you spent it all and had a limit to pay it back, if you couldn't what would you do? except from telling TNT that you didn't have enough time to earn np o_O

Get ticket
Buy item
Send item to alternate account
Send NP to alternate account
Self-freeze account.

Loans won't be coming back, no matter how many great ideas the users come up with, they won't be coming back.

I'm sorry, but where did Neopets say they were going to implment loans? I can't seem to find it in the Neopian Times Editorial, but maybe I missed it.

I think that loans would be fun, but it would ruin the economy

Sorry to burst your bubble, but been there, done that. In the first few Months of Neo, there was a loan system. It was shut down almost immediately. Bad, bad idea. If I recall correctly, they ere abused to within an inch of their existence. No chance they’re ever coming back, or ever going to work (within the realms of fairness, at least)

I've been here that long...
The loans were discontinued because people would transfer the NP to another account and abandon the loan account without repaying it. There was no NP tracking then (may still be no np tracking - who knows) so there was nothing TNT could do but stop making loans.

I like pie.

Precisely. (I've been around forever, too). I don't know about current NP tracking, but I definitely think it would be altogether too easy for that sort of behavior to be replicated if they were ever to reinstate the loan system. (Not, of course, that they will, but we're talking in theory).

even if neopets were able to track the np, its just too much of a hassle for them to implement the loans again.

Neopets used to have a loan system back in 1999/2000. When you were a newbie, the most you could borrow was 10,000 np. A lot of people just created multiple accounts, borrowed money and transferred. The money would automatically be taken out of your account after two weeks and it would be -10,000 np. I doubt that Neopets will ever bring it back as there is really no effective and safe way to do it without it being widely abused. Plus, I personally feel it would cause more begging than there already is; people would beg for loans and claim that Neopets supports it because they give out loans also o_x
