The reason i like PPT is that you put up with my Mood-swings.
Just saying.

I get bad memories of English lessons when i go on the Neopets boards.
Bad, terrible memories.

I haven't visited the Neoboards in months, but seeing this topic made me go back and just look at them. What I saw shocked, and frankly, disgusted me. People reporting topics just because what somebody said something they didn't like. Flame wars starting because somebody came onto a board that wasn't liked. And, in one of the saddest topics I've ever seen, a whole bunch of people reporting this one girl because she didn't know where the Symol Hole was at 37 months. They assumed that she had hacked the account.

There are way too many people who feel enforcing the rules are their jobs, and not enough Neopets Moniters to keep things in order. It's disgusting. I honestly wouldn't miss if most of the Neoboards were deleted; there's just not any good content found in there.

I am never going in there again. If I need help, I'll go to PPT. But never there.

---

My rant for the day. :D

Nearly all the boards are like this. I've seen people getting insulted on help chat for asking questions. People are way too report happy as well and its full of little cliques who keep thier boards posted to the top and ignore any newcomers.

I had someone threaten to report me because I told them I didn't really like my pink pet. It's bizarre. Lot's of people do get their accounts frozen for minor things on there and then you get others who are "popular" who happily post OT all the time and are generally unpleasant who get away with murder so to speak.

They need more monitors - maybe they should have some of the people who have been on Neopet's for a long time as monitors on some of the boards to help. The again age of account is no reason for someone to actually be decent on the boards.

Ah the neoboards. Once upon a time, I spent alot of time on the help chat - when it WAS for help. Made some friends, had fun, helped people out and it was overall a pretty nice place.

Then general chat was removed. Now I understand why it was, but all that really happened was the spammers, et al just spread out onto all the other boards. I think they should actually bring gen chat back so there's a place to send them when they start OT'ing and I think it'd be easier to have mods who just patrolled that board.

The report this message button -- I've wanted that gone since the day they put it there. Way too many report-happy people and it's way to easy to report anything just by clicking the link. Maybe if people had to go to the support contact page (the way we used to) it'd give them a chance to think about what and who they were reporting.

Obvious scams, auto-spammers (been alot of those lately), things like that of course should be reported. But I've seen (I've turned into a great lurker, not posting, just reading stuff) way too many Reported! on something that is on topic.

The other thing to me, is a lack of netiquette. People forget that there is a living, breathing, feeling person on the other side of that computer screen. I hope that some of the nastiness I've seen on the boards are not an indication of how some people are in RL. If they are that nasty, that combative, that narrow-minded and self-satisfied and self-centered, then I don't know how they're going to get by in the real world.

Kind of like the beggers on the boards too. Would these people go to a store and stand there and ask strangers to buy them things or give them money just because they want it and don't want to do anything to get it themselves?

Basically the only board I even post on is the charter board. And that can get nasty from time to time!

As to volunteer monitors? I don't think that would work. If people are, in a sense, "power-hungry" enough to click that Report button, what would they do with some real power? Plus, legally, I don't think Neo would be allowed to have volunteer mods since they have paid ones.

I, too, got inspired to look at the boards. :-)

I only peeked at two boards on topics that interest me and have a focused topic (Neoquest and Stocks) and in my exremely brief survey I was reminded why I never read them. :-) Danger aside, there's still the poor writing, overall extremely low quality of discussion and information, frequent "bumps" and contentless posts, and the annoying habit of putting a signature at the beginning of the post as well as the end.

I do think posting on the Neoboards is dangerous. Think about what percentage of posts about unfair freezings begin with the frozen user posting something on the Neoboards. Sure, many people post there who never get frozen, but why take chances? It's a definate risk factor and in my opinion there's nothing there that's worth the risk. You'll get better conversation, more accurate information, and more intelligent posts at a fan forum, and the risk to your account is almost nonexitant.

I admire the various PPTers who haunt the avatar board, etc. to give information to the rest of us, though. Your sacrifice is appreciated. :-)

It just makes me mad! That I have to type very slowly, and recheck my sentences before I can post a helpful hint to someone.

*grrrrr* Selfish people make me so angry!

And going along the line of mean people... One person was accused of being mean on the board, and I went and checked his lookup. He's 14, and it proudly states in his description that yes, he is mean, and no he doesn't care, and maybe if you try really hard he'll be nice to you. Those people need to be put in the sack for a beating (figurative, of course).

I just can't wrap my brain around the whole thing. When did we stop caring about what others thought of us, and that we should treat people decently.

It just brings back to mind when I watched a 10 year old grab a large garbage bag from the bus stop, empty the contents onto her schoolyard to look for her pack of smokes the principal had thrown out, and then leave it all lying there for someone else to clean up. And then she called me a b**ch infront of the principal when I went to discuss her behavior with him.

Also.. What does a bump mean, anyway?

I will explain... No wait, there is too much, I will sum up.

I went on the neoboards and was there for some time, then i left, and frankly i've been much happier. Nowadays i lurk once in a while or use the quest help page. I think part of the charm of PPT is that we are not allowed to backseat mod..thank the ppt gods for that rule. And of course the mods for being rational minded human beings.

I have had to stop my campaign against lazy people who spam the LC.

On the other hand, this has also made it much easier to shoot the people flaunting the solution around.

So.....how should I react?

Vixen, bump means to bump your topic back up so it stays on the first page or near the top of the board. Can be VERY annoying.

As to the person who actually wrote on their lookup that they were mean, there are, for whatever reason, some people who actually take pride in being mean or rude. I know of a person, name doesn't matter - it's always changing - who has something in their siggy and on their lookup about how many times they've been frozen for being mean and rude (as in harrassment). And yes, they are proud of it. I just don't get it myself. Arguing solves little and arguing on the internet is an exercise in futility.

Now, there are some people who aren't actually "mean", they're sarcastic. I have a kind of twisted sense of humor, so I usually get the sarcasm. But that doesn't mean everybody does or even that I always do. And since you can't see a person's expression or hear their inflection, what may supposed to be funny in a sarcastic/dark sort of way comes out as mean or rude.

It is much easier to just lurk, especially if you're looking for information, then leave. Don't argue with anyone, just leave! If you have to, log out. Why risk your account dealing with someone who is itching for a fight, or uses deplorable language or *shudder* chatspeak. Honestly, I don't even know what some people are trying to say half the time with that.

The site has monitors, most of them excellent (yes there have been exceptions). And usually if something's really bad they will take care of it quickly. But they can't be everywhere every minute. So if you see something awful and you know it's against the rules, then by all means report it. If it's something like spam (unless it's a spambot - do people really have nothing else to do with their time?) then walk away.

I actually think that -gasp- people generally exaggerate the evil tales of the NeoBoard.

On my old account, which I self-froze to restart the game to take me back to my initial thrill of Neopets, I was a TPC, or a Trading Post Chatter. I met up with loads of good friends, and made me sell all my items so much quicker. I posted very often, and I get no warning, nobody trying to spam me, scam me, very few chain messages and nobody reporting or warning me. If I didn't chat there, I wouldn't have found the guild I was happy with, I wouldn't have been able to complete NeoQuest, and generally I feel that it improved my time on Neopets.

The reason I don't do it anymore is not because I didn't enjopy it, but becuase I'm looking for something different of Neopets now.

Yeah, lets make "board roulette" - when its your turn you post in the neoboards, and the first one who gets frozen is the loser! 8)

jk. I don't post there, its the lair of all the reporters and all the scum of neopia. maybe some years ago it was a nice place where you could really make friends, but now its hell there.

My best friend is nine years old. v.v It has nothing to do with age. It has to do with maturity.

I have to agree. Especially on the Help Chat and and Premium Boards. People tend to be very rude and have the "mightier than thou" attitude. I tend to get attacked constantly for simply reminding people of the rules in a polite fashion. It gets very childish at times...
