Call me stupid, but what words in that sentance formed the "profanity?" i Can't figure it out.

That, like I said, took me a couple of minutes of staring at the post and trying to see what could possibly have been offensive or considered any sort of profanity, then I finally figured out it was the part that said ... "bit, ok?"

Virtual, yes I do know what you mean about the US/UK/Australia. I know many Australians use the term mate, meaning friend. That's not what it means here in the US though. So, something else meant in an innocent way ends with a warning (at least).

For awhile, the word ne was being filtered - I have NO idea why, it's Japanese and is used by many people on the boards, in their siggys, on their lookups, etc. very innocently. I've not met anyone who can figure that one out. So how the other language boards are monitored I guess are just as kind of odd as the English speaking boards.

Medusa, the not adopting a pet with a questionable or dodgey name is a very valid concern. I've heard of people being frozen for adopting a pet with an "inappropriate" name. I think what's been happening more lately is TNT is just deleting the pet and sending a warning. That is a better way to deal with that particular issue, IMHO. I just would like to see a filter that would stop someone from ever using certain words for their username or pet name, especially since many of those words ARE no-nos on the site. And personally, I don't like seeing them, and it has more than once been a pain when trying to help someone on a quest...finding a shop with a good price on a item and not being able to post the username because it gets filtered as profanity!

Combusken, that may be the case with whack equaling trying to say hack. Otherwise, well, it's innocent 99.9% of the time (probably) and people do say poke, glomp and whack to each other when they know each other on the boards, and it's yet another case of filtering a word that's on the site. That said, Mizzy, there is another meaning to that word. I will not get into that.

*reads everclear's post* Hmmm... yeah, I think with the ne, it's a case of headscratching on the part of the programmer who designed the filter system. I don't think there's many languages that get past the filters other than English and that stuff that passes for English on the boards.

About my post on the word scammer in petpages.. it was the next day after people laughed at TNT for filtering the word on the pages that they finally fixed the filter. I guess they realized that most of the people were trying to warn people off of scammers and not trying to scam people :o

Never think that the guild boards aren't being more closely monitored than before

ALSO- You cannot say AIM, MSN, YIM, IM, instant messenger, yahoo messenger ect......that one seems stupid to me still! :loser:

Kyle, I think those actually fall under the no personal information rule, like you can't just ask for someone's aim, etc. as that is personal and many people have been scammed or had other bad things happen to them using those services. There's really no reason for strangers to know your instant messenger or email, and it is for everyone's protection that those should not be allowed to be posted.

Or that could be the no outside links rule? Like people who try to post their personal website, LJ, DJ, DeviantArt sites. There's nothing wrong, per se, with posting if you have something like an honest graphics site (for instance), but there's too many people posting bad cg/scam sites. So because there's some bad people, everyone else pays!

digital! Actually it's the word bit. I don't know if it was just that word sitting on it's own or the fact that I typed ... a bit, ok that made the filter think I was trying to saying a bad word. It would be a mean thing to say to someone or call someone. And that's that!

I got a theory on why "bit" is blocked, but uhhh, I can't really say it. :P Think about it.

Maybe as in 'hit me' ? The filters are stupid on the boards, they don't block curses such as 'damn' and 'hell' but they block hit? WHAT THE HECK?? :x They don't block chain letters, but when you try to explain to a person they don't work, it blocks it! o_O

*insert snickering here* Yeah, it does appear that Neopets is using the stupidest filtering system possible! I mean, it's bad enough it changes words into others, but blocking out words just because they have alternate meanings?! Eh?! I thought that was what the monitors was for!

If they simply had mods like we had here, the Neoboards would be a safer place! :D

On the subject of why the word 'whack' would be filtered, well, there's this first reason that someone on the second page said about the word 'hack' being in it.

But I think it's because there IS a vulgar way to use the word 'whack' that I won't post here. I don't think it's used as much as the other terms used for the same thing, but it's still used.

That's going way too far with the filters. If you just say 'bit' in a message they think you're saying something that has those three letters in it? Sheesh, don't they know that people say the word 'bit' and it's not trying to cover up anything else?
