1. The AUS government is evil... though I might be biased 'cause of my dad's opinions

2. We're not all rich.... but pools are a neccesity... especially when your family won't buy air-con cause they can't afford it at the moment *thanks god its not summer or else she wouldn't be able to post cause it'd be too hot to stay in room*

3. My dad doesn't even drink beer, except at the odd party, like once a year...

4. Kookaburras are cool, they sit on the fence in the backyard sometimes. So are Cockatoos, and Gallahs.....

5. Just to clear one thing up... not everyone lives on large property with bushland out the back and a swimming pool. I'm lucky in that I have a pool, and live in a semi-rural area so bushland isn't too far away. But I live on like an eighth of an acre. Most people live closer to the city and inner suburbs and don't even have bushland nearby.

6. It's really fun listening to all your opinions of Australia, and sharing some of my own Aussie knowledge with you all. :P

7. I have no idea why I'm numbering everything... I just am. :roflol:

I'm going to reply so the things I've seen here, I find them all quite funny. I live in Australia by the way.

Quote:
Hats with corks on.

Never seen one here in my life.

Quote:
People saying 'fair dinkum'

We say it a few times. Older people though.

Quote:
You're all called Bruce and Sheila.

Never come across a person with either name.

Quote:
I used to think you all lived in the outback

Over 90% of Australians live within x amount of miles from the ocean.

Quote:
Australia is Americas lapdog

Just our Prime Minister

Quote:
600ml of sprite costs $3.50AUS at your airport and I can get 1.5L of it at the supermarket near mine for 99c NZ

You can get it for that at our supermarkets.

Quote:
You all drink Fosters

No-one drinks Fosters. Well some do but it is NOTHING in comparrison of XXXX and VB.

Quote:
If there's one thing Home and Away, Neighbours and Sleepover Club have taught me, it's that Australians have horrible school uniforms. Correct?

Most

Quote:
Lots of Australian walk around bare footed

No-one I know does.

Quote:
You all say "Crikey!"

Just Steve Irwin. And most Australians hate him.

Quote:
-Everybody says "dinkum," "chunder," and "tucker." Sometimes in the same sentence.

Never even heard of the last two.

Quote:
-Everybody in Australia loves Fosters.

One of the most unpopular beers.

Quote:
You greet folks with G'day

People are regurlay laughed at for greeting with G'day

Quote:
They are all wealthier than spit. Everyone has a built-in swimming pool in their backyard.

Where I am about every 7th or 8th house.

Quote:
They are extremely loyal to the US. I don't know why, but they are.

Again, just our Prime Minister.

Quote:
People can't be that disgruntled, how many times in a row has Howard been elected?

Only because the opposition sucks. Old people vote in masses let's not forget.

From reading bits of this, I get the feeling that some PPTers who live in Australia might be getting a bit miffed at the stereotypes some of us in the US have put forth. And are trying to justify just how untrue they are.

We non-Australian people were asked for "stereotypes," which we provided. I highly doubt that any of us US PPTers actually believe these stereotypes to be true. I know that I don't. They are just broad-based generalizations of a certain nationality. Sort of like saying "All Americans are fat." Yes, a lot of us are. But, a lot of us (*raises hand*) are not.

Before I remove my soapbox, I just want to say that I do hope everyone remembers that. And, that no harm was intended in the making of this post.

What she said, except Morningstar said it way better than I would have been able to ;)

All these stereotypes are going to help out heaps. And I'm definately not trying to justify how untrue they are - that's for my speech ;)

Though I have to say, some of them are amusing me greatly - they're just so far off track that I can't help laughing.

I'm not miffed :D , like Alex I just find some of these random stereotypes very, very amusing... so amusing that I fall off my chair from laughing so hard.

Oh, and like someone else mentioned before, most Aussies do hate Steve Irwin... well at least most of my friends and family, no one here honestly speaks like he does, I think I'd go insane from the randomness of it all... :roflol:

I thought it was a bit of a coincidence the other day because this weeks television guide actually has statistics on how much of Australia is actually desert, its 18% :)

I walk around in bare-feet, less-so as I've been getting older but I still do. I used to be able to run up and down hard gravel roads with no problems at all. Like Shoyru_Lover, I've seen people at University walking around in bare-feet, actually, I'd have said it was a big thing (would never do it myself, I've come home plenty of times with thumb-tacks in my shoes - I'd rather them in my shoes than feet).

Really? Wow, if I remember my slang correctly "chunder" is a reference to vomit and "tucker" is a reference to food. I have to admit I don't think I've ever heard anyone actually use them though.

Like some of the others have said, I'm not miffed either. I don't know how the other non-Australians are feeling about our feed-back but I have to say that if this was stereotypes for other countries I would like to be getting some responses in that its almost like a bit of fun education (population distribution statistics/guesses, geography, etc). I think what Morningstar has said about stereotypes and most people not believing them to be true is correct as well and is a very good point.

I had someone on the Internet the other day ask me if we get MSN in Australia, hehe :)
