Agreed, too many people would be able to use it to get the petpet avatars, and it would completely mess up the petpet market.

If petpets were a major influence on battling, then maybe, but I think only getting a couple of good changes a month to my pet is low enough. If the ray could hit either the pet or the petpet, the odds of getting a stat increase for my pet would be even lower.
The idea of a pay-as-you-go petpet lab ray is intriguing, though. Pay as you go would eliminate the inflation of lab pieces. Maybe a graduated scale-- 500 NP for a 1 in 5 chance of change, 1000 for a 1 in 3 chance, and 1500 for 1 in 2 chance of changing your petpet's level, color, or species. Maybe they could make it so that if you unattach the petpet, it reverts back to what it originally was, to avoid deflation of super-rare petpets.

I think there should be an option as to whether you want your petpet to be zapped. Best of both worlds, non?

No, but it would be kinda cool if there was a special lab ray for petpets. But it would have to cost 5 million np!

If it would affect the economy greatly, no! But maybe petpetpets can be zapped because anyway they can't be taken off, but it'll look good on the pet lookup!
