And if it is a legal thing (meaning Neopets having a problem with fansites using its copyrighted name, etc.), Neopets should realize that a lot of people keep playing Neopets because of the fansites. You mean even using the word "neo" is disallowed? Because "neo" is not copyrighted by Neopets.

If Neo were copyrighted by Neopets.inc, then the guys who made The Matrix should have been sued to poverty by now.

It is a legal thing from what I gather -- they specify in several cases that they don't allow sites that have things like paypal or for-profit ads (not ads that are placed on site by the webhosts) to use Neopets content (in the form of images of their properties for the most part)

This all emmanates from the fear that someone will use their content to make money.

Some of the upper Neo-Gods (CEO, Lawyerbots, etc) have to realise that fansites keep the site going, not their stupid plushies and trading card game. Taking away the fansites is like...like, well almost like them telling their own members to pack up and leave.

I don't know many other companies that make such a fuss over copyright laws. I can bet anyone that there is are hundreds disney fansite out there that asks for paypal donations to keep it going. And pokemon, and Harry Potter. I don't see JK Rowling busting out and sicking her guard dogs on anyone who asks for a donation to their HP fansite.

I think TNT should have a specific section on their site in fact, which links to various fansites. With of course a disclaimer that states that they cannot be liable for any losses (whether virtual or physical) upon visitation of these sites. Taht'll keep the lawyerbots happy, and it'll stop a couple of people from being scammed whilst searcching for a Meerca Chase guild.

I saw an index full of this in every different language possible, it seemed:

If it is a matter of funding with these Neofan sites, I really wish that they would make a plea to the people who use these sites. Honestly, I wouldn't mind plunking down 5 or 10 dollars to keep a site going--and I imagine others would feel the same way. In this day and age, $5 is two Starbucks coffees. Frankly, I can do without the caffeine buzz if it means keeping a site going for awhile, you know?

Thats why I closed a few fan sites me and friends ran. The more fans who started using the sites, the more bandwidth used. Was too much for normal hosting. And it being down when it reached it's quota isn't very nice... But I allways thought asking for donations was cheeky. I guess a pay pal button wouldn't harm no one. Not like I'd be saying "give us money or you can't come on!" :D

Hope neo items comes back soon. I was going on today to see where the "Ach y fi" drinks got to. You know, the new ones... (Mainly apple!) But I find none in the wiz... o_O

Of course this has absolutely nothing to do with Neopets or its fan sites, but this message reminded me of something that happened with Disney 15 years ago--

Playboy did the same thing twenty-some years ago to a local bar named Bunny Brown's Place, that had been named after its owner. The bar was a little hole in the wall type of place--nothing fancy--and it had been around forever. It catered to working class guys/gals who worked in nearby factories. It had a side view of a male bunny's head (not a cutesy bunny like the Playboy one, but a scruffy-looking bunny) painted on the outside of the bar.

Playboy filed a lawsuit against him for trademark infringement and the poor guy ended up going bankrupt and having to close the place because the legal fees were too much for him. He was perfectly in the right because in no way whatsoever did that bunny look like the Playboy bunny and I don't see how it could be anything close to trademark infringement by using the name "Bunny." But, they had a lot more money than he did for court costs and basically pressured him out of business. Gah! I hate big business. :x

If anyone has info on Neo Commentary, please let me know. Being a person who loves to write and who loves to write about Neo, naturally you can correctly assume that I loved that site!

I can access TNC just fine -- their frontpage is a bit off, but they're showing up.

You'll have to prove you used it first. Maybe you can copyright Znx or Wgd.

Playboy definitely can't prove they used the word "bunny" first. If they want to sue for anything that remotely coincide with their symbol, maybe they shld read Alice in wonderland first.

They can sue (and do sue) even if they don't think they can win. Unfortunately, once someone is sued that person then has to come up with money to defend themselves in the lawsuit. Even if they are right, they still have to come up with the money--either that or forfeit and then the other side wins. Which is what happened in this case. Bunny Brown was a poor working class guy--he didn't have the $300 an hour to pay attorneys to fight this case and to fight against the big time attorneys that Playboy could afford. Even though he probably would have won the case if it had ever gotten to trial (hundreds of thousands of dollars later).

In the US, you get a free attorney to defend you in a criminal case (if you can't afford an attorney), but not in a civil case.

So, in the world of big business, the one with the most money to pay to the lawyers ultimately wins.
