Today is a holiday for me because I'm Muslim. I took the day off school to go to the Mosque and pray. When I arrived there, everything was going fine. Organization was intact and everyone was smiling. Even I was, until I saw the petition.

The man speaking to the crowd was saying that marriage should only be between a man and a woman. He didn't say marriage shouldn't be between man and man or woman and woman but he was implying it. I was rolling my eyes and than he asked everyone to sign a petition that says, "Marriage should between a man and a woman". It was subtle but they really meant, "Gays shouldn't marry".

Now, I'm not gay and I don't really care if a gay couple gets married because it will never affect my life. However, the fact that he sent the petition around and was putting his anti-gay speech as good Muslims do this and such, I was very ticked off.

When the petition came to my brother, he passed it along and my dad did the same. We didn't sign it. The man beside my brother glared at me when I said, "This is stupid. Gay people should be able to marry". But I didn't care. I just was angry because he would persuade my community to do something like this. I seriously wanted to stand up and throw the petition in his face. But I can't and I won't.

This isn't about if gay marriages are right or wrong, it's simply about the fact that he basically made people feel guilty if they didn't sign it. But I'm happy my dad didn't sign it and my brother just passed it along.

Good for you Ammer! I'm glad you stuck to your morals and did what you felt right, even under pressure. If only everyone were like that....

What she said! ^

I seriously dont know where these people get off thinking they can guilt people into signing petitions because they believe that they are the ones who are right. Its a shame that someone decided to try and ruin your holiday by doing this but you did the right thing and so did your family. Well done for speaking up, maybe other people will follow your lead if this person tries it again!

Good job speaking your mind Ammer. I completely agree with you. The gay marriage thing KIND OF affects me in a way, so I have my own views on it (They agree with yours though) and hearing things like what that man was doing just makes me sick to my stomach. There's something completely and totally wrong with guilt tripping people for your "cause" and in all honestly, it's just ...I...arugh...no words man. No words.

(No I am not trying to start anything, I just wanted to say that. It in no way was meant to offend ANYBODY. I'm sorry if it did because I wasn't trying to imply nothin'.)

Too controversial a topic for here, I'm afraid. Feelings inevitably get hurt all around whenever a topic like this comes up, and I think it's best if we limit topics like this to the debate usergroup.
