Ignorance and assumption are more
wrong than anything that user lookup had on it.

neopets is mainly concerned of offending majority beliefs, and not so much the minority ones. otherwise there wouldn't be a petpet named anubis. otherwise "christmas" would never be mentioned on the site.

Actually its the exact opposite. They are much more likely to ban a reference promoting a major religion than one promoting some random cult.
Luckliy, there's been a little bit of research done and a little bit of articlage written:

And if they didn't have Anubis I wouldn't have, 'God of Embalming' the perfect petpet match for my Halloween Nimmo Shinigami (Japanese God of Death). o.o

Anubis is in Egyptian mythology and mythology has heavily influenced the media in movies, short stories and books. *shrugs* And the commerical aspect of Christmas is promoted, not the religious one. Please explain to me how Santa, or reindeer are religious? A Christmas tree is not considered to be a Pagan symbol in the mainstream media and culture neither is a Rabbit in relation to the Easter Bunny.

well, it's common knowledge that santa and the image of reindeer has to do with the christian celebration of christmas. this is not something that is a a part of any other religion.
while egyptian mythology may be part of popular culture today, what still stands is that it originated as a god. as a holy being. so, i dunno.
i am just responding to this by the way, i don't disagree with you. i'm not offended by content on the site, as long as no one is preachy or nasty to me.

I dunno, the history of Christmas is an interesting one. Santa Claus and his 8 tiny reindeer had nothing to do with religion but commercialism. *shrugs* But I'm going off on a tangent and off topic.
So long as their are no mangers, wisemen of baby Jesus on the website - I consider it to be the commercial celebration of the holiday and not the religious one.
Some people are just overly sensitive to anything that they think is religious or sacrilegious. Heck, people just to knee jerk conclusions all the time, like Neopets promotes obsesity and gambling.
Mon Dec 06, 2004 7:27 am

Neopets has no problem celebrating commercialism.
I think the terrible assumption is that playing games that involve gambling on Neopets promotes real gambling, when it might do the opposite. I lose repeatedly at
Round Table Poker, I am not gonna put any REAL money on a game. Ever.

Actually Santa did have to do with religion. He comes from Saint Nicolas, a saint from wherever it was(I'm tired right now). But I do agree that now he's just another part of commercialism. Heck, that's what Christmas has become.

Thanks, I am rather rude!

But I'm not saying the names aren't offensive Because they are bandnames. They just aren't offensive. And besides that they're very good bands.

You should watch 'charmed', witches can be good!

By good, I hope you mean well-meaning and not good at acting or talented in anyway other than looking attractive in tight clothing.
I meant well-meaning of course but they are also very talented in entertaining me for 30 mins a day. Of course the show is no award-winning material but they're not trying to, it's just silly entertainment and very effective as it is.

Hehe this reminds me of a south park episod where they removed everything that could possibly offend a member of any belief. Conclusion is: Anything can be seen as belonging to a certain group or belief and offending to another group, so you have to draw the line somewhere. I as an atheist do celebrate christmas, and I'm glad neopets celebrates it too cause christmas is fun!

I thought Chris Kringle was pagan. He married the queen of the fay. She grew old with him but he became immortal from it. Her people provide the magic and make the toys.
(For those who don't know, that is the story in the kiddie special from the people who made Rudolph and Frosty!)

I love the Legendary Adventures of Santa Claus movie. ;-; It makes me said that I can't seem to find it anywhere anymore. It was really good.

Ah yes. A Claymation Fred Astaire frolicking with various woodland creatures.
A Tradition and a half!
So has this turned into the annual "Should Neopets ban Christmas Debate", because that's a tradition I really love.
And by love, I mean every year when it happens I want to shove my finger sockets into the nearest Christmas tree light socket extension.

Ohhhh O_o you have finger sockets?!
Well getting back to the original names ... I still don't see anything wrong with them. Now there are certain words like sexy and hot that you can't type ... they're banned, hot is even in the chat rules. So how do people make username and petnames with those words in them? I find those, maybe not offensive, but definitely innapropriate.
Anubis, Horus, Geb, Selket=All Gods in the Egyptian pantheon. Mythology to some, belief to others. I am not keen on these names personally, but that is because of my beliefs. Does that mean the site should change them? No. Same with things that are called Christmas. There's always going to be people yelling about religion (pro and con), but for the most part let's be honest. Anymore it's more about the gifts, the parties, the decorating, the money than anything else for so many people. That's not to minimize or diminish anyone's faith or belief, truly. But this is a fun, game site and the yearly debate on whether the name Christmas should be removed and replaced with something like "seasonal" is, I don't know, kind of taking away from the spirit of the holidays. Just my opinion ...
Tue Dec 07, 2004 10:47 am
What annoys me is how some people argue that this or that is offensive to their religion. Not saying it happens here often, it's more of a Neoboards issue. But anyway, some people may argue that having Christ in Christmas is not appropriate on a website that caters for limitless amounts of cultures, beliefs and cults.
But then, if you replace Christ with an X making X-Mas, die-hard Christians will complain that doing this is like taking the entire meaning of Christmas and stuffing it down a toilet drain.
So, if TNT replace Christmas with Seasonal, you'll have certain groups which will complain that they are completely removing any trace of the true meaning of Christmas.
You can go around in millions of circles with this arguement. And this is just regarding the word Christmas! Words like Hell, Witch, Sexy and Hot are causing enough controversy to please Eminem himself.
I have a friend with the word Sexy in her username. Not a great friend, more like an aqaitance (sp?). Either way, she's been playing for 5 months when I last talked to her, and the ice gun had not done anything to her account.
TNT are very very inconsistent on many rules, and innapropriate words are the haziest subject. Even though Adam said it's okay, people are still probably being frozen for mentioningother websites like Ebay or Amazon. People are being frozen for saying Hell, Damn and Crap. But then, you see other people (usually well known people too) who can get away with saying the 1337 version of highly innapropriate words without so much as a warning.
Regarding the names though, I have no problem with them. My Grandma, who belives Harry Potter is evil, might have some slight problem against those names. But she's in the minority. Most people would not have any problem with those names.
If the above statements make no sense, blame it on an overdose of red cordial and sugar *eye twitch*
