You know. The banner I get most is a betting on the football banner. o_O (William hill)

I don't usually care about banners. But that ones not a good idea. For adults or kids. (I'm guessing I'm getting it because my country says Ireland or UK (depends where I am and how lazy I am :D) and that my age is set to my real age. Over 20 like...)

You can also edit your userContent.css file directly, without downloading AdBlock, etc -- and you don't need to upgrade your older version of Firefox to do it. It's probably more complicated then downloading the plug-ins, though. (Although it may be faster -- on this old computer I'm using I found AdBlock quite slow when I first tried using it to block the old benner ads.)

Credit for this solution totally belongs to VampiricMushroom on the IDB forums and Olivia on the Neocolours forums, I know jack-all about CSS:

To find your userContent.css file:

On my XP machine the userContent.css file is in the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\mynamehere\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\eausb527.default\chrome\

Once you get into ..\Firefox\Profiles\ I think you just keep going down until you get to the chrome folder.

Obviously the folder name will be your name, not "mynamehere." I think the funny-name directory may be different on different computers as well, but that's OK, it's the only subfolder in the "Profiles" folder, so just go into whatever's there.

Note that the userContent.css file might not be there already. I didn't have one until I created it. It goes in the "chrome" folder. Just make it in Notepad and save it there as "userContent.css".

This is the complete content of my userContent.css file. The first line blocks the small side ad. The second line blocks the big ad (although actually you don't really need it if you have the last line, I left it in there for the sake of completion). The third line blocks the NQII title banner because I want the extra space when I play NQII. You can leave it out or add a wildcard so it blocks all the top title banners as you please. The last line gets rid of the white space.

Code:
embed[type="application/x-shockwave-flash"][width="120"][height="60"],
embed[type="application/x-shockwave-flash"][width="728"][height="90"] { display: none ! important }

img[src="http://images.neopets.com/new_headers/games/neoquest2.gif"]{ display: none !important }

div[id="ban"] {display: none !important;}

Note that the user who I first saw post this fix on the IDB forums (VampiricMushroom) mentioned that it ought to be possible to do something similar in any browser that accepts user-defined style sheets, which I think includes IE. However, the commands may not be the same and I have no idea how to go about it, being generally clueless about css. I'm told by fellow Neocolours users that it works in Mozilla and Safari, if you can find the right place to put the file, but I haven't tried it myself.

I've not noticed problems browsing other non-Neopets sites with this so far, but I can't make promises. :-)

(Edited to fix some typos.)

Well, I've decided to change my mind. I'll continue to play Neopets, mainly after I discovered this banner blocker (that currently isn't workng, but was earlier. blocked the adds over 700 times for me this morning)

I'm very pleased to see Adam is at least reading these posts. If you do happen to read this one, and have read any of my past ones, please know that I did not intend to direct attack you or TNT. But these banners aren't great and do ruin it for many.

I still my hoard my codestones though...need to train :P

Thank you TNT! ^__^

I block the ads, but they still load even though I don't see them, and one in particular is giving me some trouble. I'll see "Connecting to network.realmedia.com" at the bottom of my screen, and the page will take forever to load (if it does at all). It's a real pain. Anyone else having trouble with it?

Same here, I've tried blocking that as well if you can.. was able to in IE, i'm pretty sure, but yeah from time to time it likes to hang on that "Connecting to network.realmedia.com" thing.. kinda annoying heh.

Think for yourself.

Yes Cranberry!! It wasn't like that this morning, but this afternoon when I tried to navigate that ad was lagging and causing the page to not load. Anyone who doesn't have banners blocked, are you having the same problem with that ad too?

Make it two, because that exactly describes the problem I have too. *inserts obligatory "real media always screws it up" - jome*

Haha, yeah, doesn't it make you want to buy their products? ;)

If anyone from TNT is reading this, please fix it or get the banner company to fix it or whatever!

I don't have an ad blocker, but I can say that off and on this afternoon (EST) pages just stopped loading - no refresh, just a blank white page. Then pages would load again, then stop.

Maybe they were changing things to make sure that just blocking the ads could not in any way stop them from downloading in the background (which I thought they did anyway - you just don't see the actual ad).

So looks like ad blocking works to the extent you're not seeing the darn things (Mitsubishi, Ask Jeeves, Google, Verizon, etc., ad nauseum) - but the "hit" is still getting in there.

It's just the realmedia thing making my pages not load -- I have no problems except for when it's loading up. And it seems to be every second page for me (playing Bilge Dice just now was NOT FUN). I think it may be because I'm Canadian -- we don't get as many different sponsor ads as the Americans, but the few we get, we see a lot.

And yeah, the hit is still getting in... and I'm okay with that, I guess, because I don't have to see it and it still helps the site. I also blocked non-Neopets cookies (it's easy in Firefox), so the ads can't actually do anything but annoy me by loading slowly.

Alright, well, this does require Firefox...but I have good news. I found a way to block the advertisements AND all that blank white space at the top. Follow these instructions carefully.

Step 1: If you don't have Firefox already, get it here. Configure it, etc.
Step 2: Download these 2 extensions in Firefox after installing the browser -
AdBlock 0.5.2
ChromEdit
Step 3: Restart Firefox, then click on Tools - Adblock - Preferences
Step 4: Add 3 new filters:
http://images.neopets.com/buttons/*
http://images.neopets.com/728ads/*
http://images.neopets.com/ads/*
Click Add button to save them. Then click done.
Step 5: Go to Tools - Edit User Files, then click on the userContent.css tab.
Step 6: Scroll all the way to the end, then enter a new line:
#ban { display: none !important; }
Click the Save button.
Step 7: Restart Firefox and enjoy an ad-free NeoPets experience.

Help! I can't download ad block or Chrom edit!

I downloaded firefox mozilla but when I try to get ad block it says extracting and then just sends me to the thing to set up firefox.

So I do the setup again, restart firefox, but when I go to tools, nothing is there!

Help please!

Check extensions to see if there's a option for it. If it's there you need to restart your broeser for it to complete the install of the extension.
