Well, I'm still stuck with no luck/chance games to play, although I did happen upon a small glitch the other day. On Halloween (when Daylight Savings Time started on the east coast) I was able to play both the Fruit Machine and the Tombola, but since then, I've been locked out again. I just assumed it was because of some crazy overlap, or something.

Still, it's obvious to see why this happened. Everyone outside Australia has this bizarre view of us being the 'lucky' country. But it's far from true. For one, we're the most over-governed country in the world (apparently) and secondly, the majority of Australians are extremely gullible and over-reactive (hence how John Howard was able to win the last 2 elections using scare tactics). So, it's pretty obvious that all it would take is for 1 kid and his mother to start up a scare campaign. And then, once the politicians and the media got a hold of it... well, then there was nothing that Neopets could do. Unfortunately.

What really sucks, though, is the fact that despite all the people who have written in to say that their staory is factually incorrect, Channel 7 and Today Tonight have chosen to do nothing about it. But that's the way is usually goes with tabloid tv, unfortunately. It's all well and good when the story's all doom and gloom and corrupted children, but give them a proper story, with the facts, and they want nothing to do with it.

I've really had enough of this. When TT just released the article me and many others were inraged(I don't live in australia through) but now nobody cares. Rightly so, through. I think most people have changed where they live by now.

I don't think the son in general was paid. His mother got all the 'glory'(which includes the money) from all this. Now, he was 'playing for months' without his mother knowing about it? Shows a little sign that she isn't a good parent.

But the question is, how is he 'playing for months' but all the quotes are wrong? 'Gambling' games make the minority of the site(Nobody is EVER, EVER forced to play them). No, you don't need to play these games, in fact, you don't ever have to play games. If you don't play them, they don't get sent to the pound('Orphanage' in article). It goes to show that TT is just making things based on consumer reports. In fact, there's a place you can send them in. Now, I suddenly think 'How could this nine year old be playing for months? And that's because, IMO, he's only been playing for an day. Or maybe a week. But then, even a newbie could understand that you don't have to play 'gambling' games!

I must say, I'm about ready to chuck the whole Neopets thing in. It's just not worth it any more.

Tue Nov 09, 2004 12:26 am

Relying on a nine year old...ONE nine year old... for information on complex website like this?

Im not even sure if....whats his name....really exists

Still, im having trouble understanding why neopets is so bad of a website that she wants to shut it down. We complain, but in truth its one of the best based-on-one-game websites out there. Maybe she went on the neoboards?

Aww Ledi, don't do that! I can understand how you all in Australia must be feeling and it is just so unfair that 2 people can start something this big. Yes, we've had our own 1 or 2 people starting a national scandal here in the US, but those are mostly huge political things. A few people complaining about a virtual online game I don't think would ever get this kind of play here. At least I hope not.

Elurial we have plenty of gullible people here too, believe me, and some really bad press masquerading as 'real news' ... and our government right now? grrr is all I'll say.

I don't know that people from the US writing to the newschannel or papers in Australia would do any good, but if you think it might help at all, please give me some emails or links. I'd be happy to write in to try to set the record straight. This whole thing is so completely twisted, untrue and unfair - to all the Australian players who either can't access things or have to change their country so they can play, and it's totally not fair to Neopets (yes I know I'm a complainer about stuff, but I think it's legitimate stuff ). This whole gambling thing is just beyond absurd.

I'm finding it hillarious about the mother's little parenting issue.

Surely if she supervised her son carefully she'd notice her son playing on a site for goodness knows how long alot with a big yellow side banner?

Tue Nov 09, 2004 11:09 am

well we are one of the most over governed, and we still have those incredibly silly laws like no horses down the main street and stuff, and its alot of trouble to get permits for things generally, i remember one incident where these people painted their fence blue, and because they didn't ask council permission they were going to get fined 1 million, and other silly stories.

but yeah, still in antartica for me :P none of the members in my guild have switched back either. :P

Hey Ledi doesn't changing your country work? Apparently it works for Autechre.

As for the Australian issue, really, it has gotten to the point that whatever can be said has been said already, Neopets should reactivate the games for Aussies.

Tue Nov 09, 2004 12:48 pm

its not the point whether or not we can change our country, thats easy :P its just a pain that we have to say that we come from somewhere we don't, that we of all the countries in the world, have this, thing, block ban thing. and its just a plain nuiscance, just as we were actually starting to get neopets stuff, and the mcdonalds promo was a good thing, then this happens.

and if the aussie numbers drop much further, they may not bring stuff here anymore :( and that will be a shame...

That depends if it's time for the media to go on another, videogames are the cause of all society's problems thing. I can remember lots of flimsy poorly researched storys based on the verbaly antidotes of one or two people where crimes were supposdly "caused" by violent videogames even if the people involved had nothing to do with such games.

Conclusions
1) the media is too sensationalist and needs to be required to do more research and present facts with less of a bias or spin (this is big problem in general, at least in the US and people are currently campagining/petitioning against it)
2) people need to learn to take responsibility for their own actions (and their own parenting for that matter)
3) The US media is just as stupid as the australian media (or more so)
4)The banning of Australian players from dailys is stupid.

hmm i saw not so long ago a story about a guy who feeds the local pelican. and the council wanted him to stop because obviosly the bird is becoming dependent, and the media got onto in and made such a huge sob story out of it. after watching it you came out with a vague idea that something on the scale of the titantic just occured.

and i believe it was TT as well :P

A small update... I haven't actually been on Neopets since the last time I posted here (Sunday morning, I think). But when I went on today, I could play everything on the site - including the luck/chance games.

Is this happening for any other Australians? Or is it just me? And, if it's just me, I'll test it again tomorrow and let y'all know how I get on.

Thu Nov 11, 2004 1:18 am

Yay! I just got Tombola and the Fruit machine to work! Without changing my country!

Now I'm going to go and catch up on all the neopoints I've not lost on Dice-a-Roo. :p

Could other Aussies poke around and see if we've finally been allowed luck/chance games again?

Thu Nov 11, 2004 1:19 am

how do you change your country? I'll become an Aussie and see if it works. :)

YAY

Thu Nov 11, 2004 1:19 am
