Flutes In Jazz Band....

Wed Oct 13, 2004 1:58 am

:D I'm one of them :D:D:D so please don't say it's a silly idea.

Ok,I'm going into highschool next year.
My band director this year and last year let me and another friend in Jazz Band right after christmas last year as flutes(but now i'm the only one because my friend abandoned me *glares*)
Ok my problem. I really like it and I don't think the highschool director lets flutes in Jazz Band,if they even have one.I'd love to learn the Alto Sax and try to get in that way,but guess what? My mom has said no for about a year now.

Well all Flutes In Jazz Band, come here!

I was a flute player, but to be in jazz band I had to play piano. The only advice I can think to give you is to try to talk to the HS band director. Usually they're pretty helpful. :)

Well I guess I dont' really NEED to yet...I mean there's still a long ways to go,but still. I'm shy and I don't really like talking to people I don't REALLY know..my cousin on the other hand had the nerve to talk to the principal in the middle of one of his classes to talk about selling the principal's house. Anyway this cousin is the teacher's teacher's pet I think. Anyway.I think I'm rambling. Who knows, maybe my mom will get me an alto. Yeah right.

I played flute in jazz band when I was in grade school. I wish I could have played flute in high school jazz band instead of trombone. Then I'd probably have the guts to actually improvise some. ^_^

I did NOT completely abandon you.I love the flute, I really do, I play it and the Alto Sax along with a very little bit of guitar but nevermind that.In Jazz Bandlast year I was put in to play Flute and at the beginning of the year I was asked to play alto and was given the 1st Alto (not 2nd) part, and I love it since at the moment I have two solos. In regular band I play my flute and i'm doing a trio along with a solo on my flute this yr. for our competition thingy. So ya I didn't COMPLETELY abandon you and plus I still sit beside you!

I can't relate to flute, but I tried to join Jazz Ensemble with clarinet. it didn't work out since clarinet is mainly found in dixiland jazz, which we don't play often, so I had to learn tenor saxophone to get in. However, I never got good enough to reach the band that actually performs.

EDIT: Blasphemy! I mis-spelled saxophone.

I'm a trumpet, so I didn't have too much of a problem getting into jazz band...

I don't mind flutes in jazz band, as long as they don't make themselves annoying. There was one girl in our jazz band who played flute and INSISTED on playing a solo, even though it couldn't be heard with the accompaniment. She even got all upset when our band teacher suggested that a group of flutes play instead of just her. *groan*

Anyway, talk to the director and see what (s)he is willing to take. Then discuss with your mom the possibility of your playing a school or rental alto sax instead of her having to buy you one.

And if it doesn't work out, there's always marching band, which is durn awesome. :D

We are starting to let flutes into jazz band this year - and I'm not to sure that I'm keen on it yet.

*ducks tomatos and sharp objects*

Hey, hey - I play flute! I sit first chair, and if I would go play in the jazz band, I'm sure it would be fine. But if you throw a 7th chair into the mix who doesn't do any dynamics or style - it makes you want to rip your hair out.

I currently play piano in our jazz band - and I want to murdur the flute who is playing now, because she is so off from the music.

It really depends, I think you have to be a skilled flautist to pull it off.

What did you do as a flute in jazz band? I play flute, and even though I could probably learn another instrument, I don't really have time. But I would like to be in stage band. (what we call jazz band)

Our director writes out most of the music for me by combining parts (sometimes) so I just play what he writes.

A LOT of people underestime jazz flutes. Even a lot of conductors do. But given the propper music, a flute is a jazz instrument if I've ever seen one. You have to work hard at it though. Have fun with it. :)

Yep it is fun, even though you cant' hardly hear me over the first and second trumpets, percussion and keyboard :D It's hard work too,but It usually sounds good,If i know my parts.

Maybe I should talk to my director about it...... Callie, what parts are combined, because it might help if I can give him ideas on what I could play?

Well usually he writes out the 1st Alto Sax part transposed however many notes up it is for the flute. On Frosty the Snowman he crossed the 1st Alto with the 1st Trumpet.

Then on Bad Attitude I had the 1st Alto, then when the solos came I had the Trombone part I think.

I play every song,but usually It's about a week before I get my part,because he's a last minute forgetful person/

And off topic sorta:I'm now in Heartland Honor Band :D
