Just now when I logged on, I was face-to-face with a pharmaceutical flash banner, advertising for some Hepatitis C drug. I question whether Neopets is the proper venue for pharmaceutical advertising. It's bad enough that the U.S. Navy is advertising on the site, but drug companies???!

We aren't even allowed to discuss health problems on Neopets, but they advertise prescription drugs now. We aren't allowed to discuss social, political, or religious issues at all....period. Yet we're free to gaze at advertisements for the military in a current state of wartime.

Kind of double-speak, if you ask me.... :o

I have a feeling that they don't have much control over the ads as they do with the smaller ads. I noticed the other day, they one of the ads that are cycled from Tribal Fusion links to an infamous spyware package (the thousand or so smileys)

I don't like that sense of security has now failed on a site that I would think would be safe for surfing without such woes.

no no no no no :x

i never thought neo would come to this. although somehow i'm thinking the pop-up may be unrelated. do you have ad-aware or spybot installed?

and really, does the average neopets user suffer from hepatitus c? cmon now.

EDIT: nevermind, i saw another person who posted she got pop-ups even though she has spyware-removal software.

it makes me sad.

I keep getting one of those banner ads for a credit card deal that flashes like 1000 times a second. *thunks head*

Guys, there is a way to block advertisement without installing any softwares, I will show you how. (cut) If you want a list of all the spam sites, private message me, I will email it to you. It works on Neopets also.

iconoedit: As is true for editing any system file, editing the hosts file can be potentially dangerous and damaging to your computer if you don't know what you're doing. Plenty of free and safe software will manage this for you, and it generally isn't necessary to do if you're running spyware blockers, such as SpywareBlaster (which I highly recommend). I'd hate to see someone's computer become damaged, and as such, I've removed the instructions here.

Although Adam is in charge of site content, it is very likely that he *does* have significant input as to the advertising on the site. After all, banner advertising was Adam's forte before he founded Neopets. He's owned several online banner advertising firms, including NetMagic, Shout! Advertising, and Powlex Ltd. Information on all these companies is easily obtainable thru Google, as well as Neopets' own Press Kit. ;)

On an aside, I just noticed that my cookie file now has 16 cookies from Neopets. Do they really need that many cookies to track me??

Yeah, I was like 19 when I ran those companies. I hate banner advertising now, I really do...

So Adam, when are we going to get our luck/chance games back? :p

I've got really annoying banners up top, no luck chance games, no halloween toolbar, and no giveaway!

:x
