Yellow Bar beta test results/comments.

Sorry for that, it's just people who don't listen annoy me.

Now, for my comments: A well needed change. My only criticism is that on a 1028x800 resolution, my SN & NP don't show up without scrolling down.

Now for a cruel suggestion

On loading the page, it generates a random number between 0 and 25, then puts that many 1-2 px thin white lines underneath the banner - That should thwart the autobuyers, i think.

Yes, as sapphire mentioned, its not the yellow bar banner we were suggesting be removed during neoquest, its the separate neoquest banner which could perhaps only be on the main page and not show up while we're actually playing, then we'd have an inch more screen room which would be MUCH less frustrating.

Anyway, as far as problems. I've noticed that when I went to the Lab Ray the top did that stretch thing where there's a white gap. That's all I've seen today.

Edit: Also getting a gap like that on my quick ref page.

The quick ref is where I got the gap too.

Edit: and the Lab. I realized what's causing it - the four pets (I have four pets, I'm sure rageaholic does too) are stretching the page, thus stretching the yellow bar, THUS causing the gaps. The bar just needs to be widened to take this into account.

I like the new yellow bar. It gives the site a rather new look while still having the familiar sidebar. I do have a suggestion though. Perhaps the smaller ad to the side could be removed, since now there is a large one at the top. And maybe reposition the User/Pet/NP so it's above the Search box.

It's gonna really screw up NQ2 - thats my main concern. If the other suggestions wouldnt work, would maybe it be possible to run nq2 in a seperate pop up window, similar to the flash games? I love nq2, but scrolling every damn round would be incredibly annoying...

Ok, Im back from school and off to test. I still have the gap when I visit the guild homepages, and that transparency with the top part is getting to me everytime i visit my shop front. Other than that, it's fine. Im off to test some more.

After 24 hours of beta testing, I keep coming back to my original impression. I strongly believe you need to offer users a low-bandwidth HTML option and a high-bandwidth Flash option. This would do away with most major concerns, such as slow loading times for dial-up users, the slowing down of games for those with older CPUs, and the triggering of neurological symptoms (which occurs far more often than you may think in the general population).

I realize that over 40 percent of banner advertisements rely on Rich Media content, such as Flash, but I don't believe it is vital to effective marketing strategy. Just my 2 Neopoints worth...

Ive not had a problem with NQII in firefox, only with Internet explorer cos of the difference in the size of the tool bars. But, that seems like a great suggestion to me to get rid of the NQ Banner when you are playing the game would also help people on dial up I would think, 1 less pic to load! I dont like the idea of opening it up in a new window, cos then you would miss random events and also would miss neomails etc.

Speaking of Random Events has anyone had any with the new tool bar, if so can you post a screenie, would be interested to see how it looks........or if you just wanna send the baby paintbrush random event over to me, thats good too!!:P

I never get Random events. i've had ONE since getting the toolbar, and i've been doing some serious clicking!!!

I really really really agree with Saph Faerie about the different color banners. I understand that you guys are very busy trying to work this out right now, so just focus on getting the yellow one right. But once you do, could you do a couple simple color fills on it? Like Saph Faerie, my favorite color is blue and I would love to be able to express personality through the bar. Even if others wouldn't see it I would like looking at the color I wanted there.

I think the 4 base colors that normal neopets already come in (red, yellow, blue, and green) would be a good place to start. But after that, unique lookups like that halloween one would be awesome. Maybe making them like Avatars, maybe making them seasonal (for instance you can choose to have a halloween bar for October but then it gets turned off until next year).

I don't go on the neoboards much so I would like something to "collect" that I would use on a daily basis on Neopets.

neither do I! So my suggestion is to send random events to everyone with the new toolbar, purely for research purposes of course! After all we need to know how they are gonna look under the banner!!

I totally agree with that, I spend ages getting avatars that i will never use. I wouldnt mind spending ages (and probably np) getting something I will enjoy.

Alternate Advertisement Placement

Most Neopians play at least some flash games. There are already short animations on the load screens. Why not replace those with neo or sponsor advertisements instead of having this in your face flash advert? I certainly stare at my loading screen longer than any of the pages.

It seems quite a few people don't like the top bar or the banner advertisement. I wouldn't mind seeing an advert for Sparkle Happy Fresh Deoderant while I'm waiting for Freaky Factory, or a screen after I sent my score that says Like this game? Why not play Teenage Popstar Rampage next?..

Just a thought...
