Ok, so here's a summary of the main complaints of the toolbar ( I don't think Adam would feel inclined to sieve through that pile of replies ;)):

1) Longer loading time for dial-up users.
2) May cause headaches/dizziness/seizures/hallucinations (:P) for certain people.
3) Large flash ads may slow down slow computers.
4) Everyone is keen on having different themed toolbars.
5) Any others I missed?

What i've seen mentioned a bunch is that scrolling is a big issue on some pages now.
For example playing NQII you need to scroll every single page to fight properly.

Also I'd like to mention as an addition to number one. I'm on an extrodinarily high speed connection but I still sometimes (Especialy during peek usage) experience some problems with extreamly slow loading of images. The additional load time will affect people who arn't on dial-up as well.

Now on a personal note.

Although this isn't universal I object strongly to the banner adds in general. Neopets doesn't need this for revenue and adam's intimated that it'll be mostly the same adds as the smaller add which means largely in-site game ads. Most of neo's revenue seems to come from immersive sponsor advertising and merchendice sales not traditional web ads anyway. That mean's it's NOT necessary and there seems to be a great deal of complaint about it.

Personally I think I may have to quit if the new tool bar with the top banner ad is implemented. This is too bad since I've been playing for about two years and enjoy the game. However I don't think I can deal with the banner add not to mention the difficulties it adds to the game (loading, scrolling and ugliness chief amoung them)

The big concern I have is that it won't work well with safari, I know we're not a major marketshare, but it would be nice if we could make sure that the internet (neopets included) doesn't bow down and concede to microsoft and IE-
There seems to be more scrolling/positioning problems with nonIE browsers :(

I'm sure it will be fixed before the main bar is released though.

Not sure if it's too late to post a bug report...

But I've been getting logged out for some strange reason ever since the new sidebar....

Just happened for the fourth time now, while spinning the wheel of med.

Which leads to another things...the "oops you have been directed to this page from the wrong place" page has the elongated paragraphing text error. ;)

Mrf...I really have to go to bed now... I'm not made for staying up this late. If Adam drops by, could someone please direct him to the issues that myself and everconfused are raising on previous pages? It would be appreciated.

Figures, stuff like this always happens when I'm asleep.

I realize this is probably over but TNT if you need any testers who use Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox (including on Linux) my ID is the same as on the forum. I notice a lot of things users do to their lookups only work in IE so I am hoping TNT will think of us non-IE users. :battar:

I know another Neopian w/ Meniere's disease. He doesn't have the dizzyness problem, just deafness :( My main annoyance with the top banner will be scrolling more. I've learned to auto-ignore top banner ads as I'm sure many people have, they are so annoying.

What would Honor do?

At the very least, I wish you guys would leave the top banners off of Neoquest II and the other non-flash games. The amount of scrolling that will be needed to get through NQII with the new banner will be immense. If your resolution is set to 800x600 I bet you won't even be able to see your party on the map without scrolling... and not everyone can use a lower resolution, due either to computer display or vision-related issues. So they'll have to scroll every single time they move. Not fun.

If fewer people decide to play NQII because of the top banners, then besides a lot of unhappy users, it also means a lot fewer page views for the site.

 I'm just worried that the huge top banner is going to comprommise the usability of the site. Besides the fact that I like Neopets and want to keep using it, I can't see that making the site more annoying to use is going to be good for Neopets in the long run, even if it does bring in more revenue in the short-term.

Im mainly use firefox and the only problem Ive encountered is that the scrolling text doesnt work for the new event feature. A minor irritation, but could be fixed......i think! Comparing it to IE though, I had to scroll down more in IE cos of having the yahoo and neopets toolbars on.

sorry I dont have safari, opera or netscape to compare with but, Im sure someone else on here must have been testing it with that.

I have one more little bug to report...this new toolbar keeps changing my text size in IE from medium to larger. It's extremely annoying.

Ok, long post beware, i've just read through about 15 pages of comments, so i dont post anything that's been said, and here are my comments on what's been said, and about using the new bar.

i personally quite like the top banner, but that's just me. i think making an option for people with a slower connection, computers and ppl with dissabilities etc to have a html animated image instead, which can be set to loop once, or not at all would be a much better way to go about it. offering people either the old or new bar is just stupid, as then you'll get even more problems with lookups and overlayed bars in there.
Another thing about the moving ads, besides the loading time, more to do with the disability thing (dont know how else to refer to it, you all know what i mean), would having less or slower movement in all the banners be better? some of them really are quite obtrusive, but i've seen a couple that aren't as bad...

personally, i tried the new banner at uni today, which runs really old macs (they're sooooo slow it's painful) and in IE they loaded fine, and weren't too slow at all, but the connection is mega fast.

the edges/corners of the new toolbar are still not transparent, so any lookups/guilds/shops that dont have white backgrounds look odd.

that haunted theme is fantastic!!! is that going to be a theme for the whole site or a selectable one, like was suggested? (is it the ''think chat avatars'' thing?)

For userlookups, we'll probably replace the top banner with a big DHTML frame with my animated face in. It'll move around the screen breathing fire and paint all your Neopets with the mullet paint brush.

:roflol: you've been reading the other threads!! lol having a mullet paintbrush should SOOOOOO be somekind of joke you guys bring out, for april fools or something....

anyway, back to the sidebar...

this is similar to what i mentioned last nite about the card games and cell-block. is there a way of still having these games still html coded, but in a pop-up window (like the interaction between icons). that way you can play the game without the extra scrolling, but the banners still stay...

i still think the clock is a bit prominent and in your face. is there a way to remove the black outline around it, and possibly change the shape of the background to tie it in with the rest of the bar (partic the pet central & create a pet.

i think thats it for now... :)

Excellent post, r4che1. :) Very good points, and a good solutions. I too think HTML version for slow comps would be a smart move....very good idea there. We have HTML version for the maps, may as well have the same options for the toolbar, right?

Not a possibility bringing the old bar back. Adam mentioned earlier (I think it was the topic that was locked) that the new bar with the banner ads were a necessary evil...so, new bar it is (or something that incorperates the large rotating banner), no possibility of getting the old one with the small ad back. I really hate what it does to my lookup and custom sidebar though. :P Guess I'll have to live with it.

Man, don't go getting crazy on changing things for lookups. Aside from my sidebar not have the links in the correct order from the change I've already adjusted it. You just like making poor old me put effort into things don't you?

Anyway, as far as problems. I've noticed that when I went to the Lab Ray the top did that stretch thing where there's a white gap. That's all I've seen today.

Edit: Also getting a gap like that on my quick ref page.
