Not so sure about colouring, besides using layers a lot if you have an art program that can do them. I like to put each different colour on a seperate layer.
As for shading, it's mostly a matter of learning how to determine where shadows and such would go if a light were to be shone at something in a certain direction.. Perhaps when you're going to do something, a good way would be to turn on a light and stand in front of the mirror, and look at where the shadows and such go. I think one espeically good thing to understand is the differences between shading on flat things and more round things (there's usually either a lot less or a lot more shadow on a flat thing because the entire surface would get mostly the same amount of shadowing on it). ^^; There's likely tutorials.. Just go on google.com and look up shading tutorials. *bad at explaining things XD*
