...You know, it's a sad sad world when a stupid Article has forced a virtual pet site to stop a Tombola stand, because it was considered gambling...

Y'know, it was nice to be mad at someone other than TNT for once, but...
Wouldn't it have made sense for them to give a brief explanation as to what's happening?
Just a quick, "something's come up, some members may not be able to reach some pages, we're looking into options, we'll check back soon"
I know this situation is far from their fault, but while they were putting up two days worth of news today, shouldn't they have just given a little post-it explanation.

Optimus - You're welcome.
Something had to be done - the truth needed to be told. Nobody was doing anything when I was online, so I decided to go ahead and email them.

Hey guys, watch Today Tonight news tonight, they have neopets on! I hope they say how wrong their facts were! I saw it briefly advertised on tv while watching Deal or no Deal.

*rolls eyes*
I just watched it. Apparently they were telling the 'other side of the story'. I couldn't tell.
They were repeating the same claims as before. That they were desperate for ideas; that you have to gamble or your pet dies; and that it's a gaming site by McDonalds.
They also showed the username of one of the accounts as they showed the screen. With 600k on hand. I'm not revealing that name, but I have a feeling she'll be a target.
Since they came up with even more false claims this time round, I'm going to continue taking action and contacting the media.
Edit: Also, can someone kindly tell me which game 'roulette' is on the site? I can't for the life of me remember, but I don't want to say something which I'll then have to withdraw later.

My 7 year old daughter is a very happy, involved neopian and to date she has not once asked me to take her to the local casino to gamble her birthday money.....yet! Until she does, Im perfectly happy for her to play on any game on the site. Mind you, i watch her like a hawk whenever she is on the computer regardless of whether she is playing neopets or visiting the Barbie webbie. What else can she do, we cant have pets because of where we live, and these are 'her' pets.
Maybe we should make our kids watch the news instead of learning important life lessons through a virtual world. Yes they would be much safer learning about the real world where people get killed, countries get bombed and people are still starving while others get richer and richer.
We sadly cannot protect our children from everything, we can only do our best to educate them to make informed decisions when they are confronted with a 'danger'. It is my opinion that if a child is faced with the real world early (if only via neopets) then when that child turns 18 they will not go running into a pub, casino and drug dealers house with their birthday money, because they have the necessary information and skills to be able to make their own right decisions.

i think from memory they referred to the WoE and the Wof monotony as the roulette wheels, they did show the WoM in conjunction with the word roulette, so its that one i'm guessing.
i rang them up twice, and one person was very nice about it, the other was frankly quite rude. the only other tv station which has worse representative staff is channel 9, they treat you like idiots the 5 times in the past i've had to ring them.
it would have been nice of tnt, but right now i think they don't want to say anything that may get them in hot water later, like if they said that gambling has been taken off the site, then they are leaving themselves open for pointed questions about why wasn't it done earlier, why is it still avaliable in other countries ect thing. i guess tnt lawyering team is also onto it, and you know the lawyer basic tv advice, don't say anything, just in case
and, all the aussie members of my guild have changed themselves over to other countries, ones in japan, the other ireland, the other france, and the others are in other places all over the place

i'm still debating over it, i like to say i'm from australia, but the daily thing is annoying me.

Good on you for calling them.
I'm nearly finished my letter to the Herald Sun, and I'm sorely tempted to email ACA and The Age. Opinions on this?
Thu Oct 14, 2004 10:23 am
Email away. Inform as many people as possible. I'm really angry that this is even happening. But I dunno if it's really gonna make much difference. I mean, I can see Today Tonight doing another story which will again be biased and feature that mother ranting on about how evil the site is.
Hey did you know that a lot of people now think that Neopets is owned by McDonalds?
Thu Oct 14, 2004 10:35 am
I noticed that - I saw it and was just shaking my head at the pitiful amount of research done.
I've just emailed my letter to the Herald Sun - I'll upload it as I did for the last one for those of you who want to read it.

Well, you can't really expect much better from TT. They're always so biased and one sided. And when it comes to Neopets, most people reckon they know everything about it. I remember giving my cousin a hard time when she showed me Neopets. Then I got hooked. Even after she quit, I'm still playing. But the reason I gave her a hard time was because I felt as if I understood every prospect of the site (and damn, was I wrong).
The biggest mistake TT made was that they assumed they understood everyhting, and based all their views on what on little 9 year old kid said.
And now, Neo will be in all the newspapers and they'll all be hounding it and blabbing on about how bad it is.
Okay, I've had my say

the thing on today tonight was just on for perth/WA viewers, and i must say, thats the same amount if not more rubbish that was on yesterday. they are still going on about the orphanage thing for a start, and there was still alot of rubbish on about addiction ect.
actually is ACA running the same sob story? if not, there is a greater chance they will promote a different view, just to annoy channel 7

not much chance, but its always nice to hope
Thu Oct 14, 2004 10:46 am
I'm pretty sure that ACA isn't running the story, which is why I'm eager to contact them.
The letter I just sent:
http://www.lost-thoughts.com/hsletter.html
It is somewhat similar to last night's letter, but it addresses the points raised in the Herald Sun article.

It was so bad, it seemed like they were trying to say that how upset everyone is getting over this only shows how addicted everyone is. I mean, yeah, they mentioned people's ages (all 18+) but they really needed to point out that these people can LEGALLY go down to the casino and blow $50,000 if they choose to. Agggh!

i guess that wasn't considered as important as blowing imaginary pixels

which is of course a much worse crime
