Hmmm... so public outrage in Australia has probably caused TNT to shut down those parts of the site (at least for now). Thanks for pointing the article out, it helps explain things a little, at least we know what's going on now!

*mutters* Well, this certainly explains it.

For all the hype, I doubt many 8 year olds would actually understand how to play games such as blackjack, poker, and the lottery.

What about parents teaching games such as that to their children? Is that now wrong too?

These 'Victorian Watchdogs' desperately need to distinguish from reality and a virtual, fantasy internet site. There are several sites aimed at children, with popup ads advertising free online casinos. I don't see them being shut down.

Quote:
"There's a number of games you can play on that website. It's an interactive website, it's not a reality game," she said.

I couldn't agree more.

Gone, forever.

That's utterly stupid. It's people with thoughts like that that burned piles of Harry Potter books because they promoted "witchcraft".

People are getting too crazy with censoring children. If they just spent a little more time with their kids, they wouldn't have to worry about them learning about gambling on an online forum or witchcraft from a book or watching the wrong tv channel or whatever. It's getting out of hand. It is the most sheltered kids that act out the most later.

I'd rather give my children the freedom to learn and if they stumble onto something they are not supposed to or that is not age-appropriate yet, then I have a talk with them and explain why they can not do that right now. Parents need to censor their kids, not let these groups do it for them. -.-

I agree with this ... a group, whatever the size, trying to dictate what is or isn't appropriate. The few should not be able to speak for the many.

I still have a hard time with the whole Harry Potter book burning - and I know it happened more than once! I think there are more adults wanting to go to Hogwarts than children, to be honest.

And I agree that there's probably not alot of 8 year olds playing poker. Geez, I still don't understand that one myself!

There are alot of parents who are using the internet the way they use(d) TV - as a babysitter, instead of spending time with their kids. Then they wonder how or why the kids say or do some of the things they do.

Neo (or any other game site) should not be held to a standard of "online gambling" if no real money is involved. If someone's on the site, wants to play the chance games, buy a lottery ticket or scratchcard - whatever, they should be able to. If they end up spending/losing all their np, well then hopefully that'll teach them something that they can take to real life - like don't gamble or if you're going to gamble do it within limits.

Maybe Neo needs to make some kind of chart or something showing the ratio of who plays what games. I don't even know that many people who regularly play the chance/luck games because they don't want to spend the np on them.

And blocking the dailies/McD giveaway? How on earth is that gambling?! Enough is enough. TNT has rules upon rules already. Now outside groups are going to try to add even more rules?

pfft that explains it.

if so, don't block it for the rest of us older users, just block it for the younger ones, they can already block neobaords and stuff for younger users, its going to be a pain for me, wonder if they are going to block this for older users as well?

hopefully this gets mentioned in nf, so we have a clearer idea

If you see my sanity, get it to give me a call.

I'm currently very distressed over this issue. The "neopets issue", as i've dubbed it, was shown on the queensland TV show 'today tonight'. The username and pets name of the people in the story were clearly shown and i hate to think of the ammount of hatemail they would currently be recieving.

Its really annoying because not only do i no longer have access to my daily's I also can no longer use scratch cards. grrrr :x . This is not acceptable in the slightest!

Edit
: http://seven.com.au/todaytonight/story/?id=16887

This is the afore mentioned story. Not only is it untrue its badly researched as well !!!

I didn't watch the news, or Today Tonight, but one part of your post stood out.

That is just plain wrong. Whether or not the accounts were created for the sole purpose of investigating the story, they shouldn't have shown the username. You'd think that a well known show like that would have known that, and respected the privacy of those users.

I happened to be on the internet at the time of the story and I myself have the username. I don't plan on neo-mailing them or anything but the account is only one day old, so i think it may have been created just for the story... But then again they have played games :o

Would you mind PMing me the name of the username? I'm not planning on harassing the user; rather, I would just like to look at the account myself.

I'm sorely tempted to email both the Herald Sun and Today Tonight and set them straight about the story, the side of the players, and the many flaws in their report.

You're right, this is really badly researched:

Quote:
As Michelle's son Harley explains, you need to gamble to raise points to feed your virtual Neopets.

There a plenty of ways to earn neopoints that don't include the games that have been taken off the site because of this.

Quote:
He says if you don't gamble up enough points to feed your pet, it goes to the "orphanage".

Ummm... what is this "orphanage", if its the Pound then its your choice to put the pet there, if its the Soup Kitchen its just so you can look after your pet (main aim to show kids that they should be caring for their pets).

I'm guessing the show will be on later here in Perth, will have to watch it and see what is said.

That whole report in the Today Tonight seemed to be a bowl of crock. How ridiculous! Most of it wasn't even true. The lengths some overzealous people go to . . . it's disturbing. -.-

I'm currently composing a letter to Today Tonight, and I will most likely write a similiar one directed at the Herald Sun.

If anyone's got any suggestions for what to include, they will be taken on board.

Thats exactly what i was thinking while watching it. It also mentioned the soup kitchen but i remember them saying something along the lines of "if the user is too poor they have to goto the soup kitchen to feed their pets". I'm just glad the soup kitchen is better now then it was about 3-4 years ago.

I was thinking the same thing, considering Today Tonight hasn't been on yet in Perth I'm thinking of taking notes when it is on...
