It doesnt matter that they had more than two singles, it was only those those two that had any success. Plus apart from on the album itself I've never seen the other two released.

Im not attacking you of course. Just wondering how you would deem the most succesful Rap artist of all time to be a waste of time, and yet revere the Miss "Mall Crasher" Lavigne. I'll admit that she writes the odd catchy tune, but nothing thats ever moved people the way that Eminems music has.

Im guessing its relative to common ground.



Firstly, let me say that I hope you are basing this on his musical history. This is a music forum, and though I understand that his personal problems may affect your opinion of him, and I respect that that you are more than entitled to that opinion, dont expect me to respect your views of his music if you base them on anything but his music.

Secondly, can anyone here possibly imagine the impact on music, nay, society today, had Michael never shared his gift with the world. He is easily in the top 10 most influential recording artists of all time, and not at the lower end. I would wager quite a lot that even if you do not own a Michael Jackson Album, that he was the inspiration that brought about the career of the artist of one or more of the albums you do own.

I'd like to list all of his accomplishments here, but the lists from 1983 to 1984 alone take up some 5 pages of A4 paper, so you'll forgive me if I just include his Album sales figures.

In regards to the first part of the post: Eminem is hardly a prodigy. He is obviously very shallow (at least what I've seen in interviews of him) and is just like any other rapper. Rappers, in my own opinion, don't have very much talent. I strongly dislike that kind of music. I dislike Avril as well, but to even put the two in the same CATEGORY would be demeaning to Avril (yes, I do hate her music. And she is a poseur). In all fairness to Avril, she does have TALENT.

In regards to the second part of the post: -claps- I've been waiting for someone to say that for a looooooong time. Sure, he may be a bit eccentric in real life, but he is a musical GENIUS. I am a huge fan of his music, and I'm delighted somebody out there will not just judge him on what the media says about him.

*nods* If it wasn't for Micheal Jackson, Justin Timberlake wouldn't be who he is today. You'd be surprised at how many modern day pop artists regard MJ as their ultimate influence and idol. I myself love Micheal Jackson, his dance moves are well funky!

A lot of people may say Michael Jackson on his personal life, but of course there could be some who just don't like his music ^^ I'm not a big fan. *shrugs*
As for sales, That 3 of a King Babycakes rubbish (most likely one hit wonders) got to #1.

I see that you don't see Eminem as anything special, but is this because of his music or because of how he acts in interviews or television spots? Seems to me that, as Jim pointed out with Michael Jackson, you may be basing some of your opinion on his music on something other than his music. I personally wouldn't say he's just like any other rapper musically, as he seems to be the only one nowadays who doesn't rap about being a (not sure if the word's allowed here - starts with a p and ends the same way) or how much street cred he has. Also, he's the only rapper I can remember who has won an Academy Award.

I can't say that I've ever seen Eminem in an interview or other similar situation, so I have no idea on how he acts in that respect. Even if I did happen to see him in an interview where he acted like a jerk, that wouldn't change my opinion of his music, which, for the record, really isn't even all that high anyway. I mean, the songs of his that I've heard I haven't strongly disliked, but I haven't particularly liked them either - I'm indifferent. Still, I can appreciate his music enough to know that he is *not* like every other rapper.

*shrug* I respect that you dislike Eminem's music, though I'd hope you dislike it based entirely on the music, not on how Eminem acts in public.



I respect your opinion, though I'm a little shakey on it. Do you just think rappers have little talent because you dislike rap music? I can't agree with that. See, I personally dislike much of Christina Aguilera's music, but I still appreciate her wonderful voice and singing talent. Her music may not appeal to me, but I can still see that she does have talent.

Exactly why do you believe rappers don't have much talent? I will agree that there are many rappers nowadays who are fairly popular that don't seem to do much rapping or writing anymore, and they're unfortunately the ones who get the most play. But there are also many other rappers out there that can write powerful, wonderful lyrics and can rap just as well. I personally think that rapping does take talent, as I find it amazing (when it's done well, anyway) to be able to speak so quickly, keep the beat, and still keep the force of the song.

I'm more familiar with older rap than I am with new, so when I think "rappers" I think Run-DMC, Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, all who, I believe, had evident talent. I don't really keep up with modern rap, but I'm sure some still have great lyrical and rapping talent. Sure, you may not like rap, but, to me, one should still be able to look past personal preference and appreciate talent, whether it be in rapping, singing, dancing, writing, or anything else.

Anything gets to #1 nowadays unfortunately. Oh well, I don't really pay attention to the charts or the Top 40 or whatever.

i was going to put eminem as someone who should have been a one-hit wonder, too. i'd have preferred a zero-hit non-wonder, personally. his lyrics are just so UGH, he's hypocritical, and a good argument for his popularity has much to do with race. but i sho' ain't getting into a race argument on the PPT forums.

and michael jackson = brilliant. especially if you break out his old school stuff. and my old school, i'm talking the jackson 5. those songs are the jam.


should not have been one-hit wonders: harvey danger! (you all know what song i'm talking about. "paranoia paranoia everybody's coming to get me...") i love that band so much. i hear they're getting back together, so there may be hope for them yet!

Mm, anyone remember the Bloodhound Gang with their song "The Bad Touch", aka the Discovery Channel song where the Gang jumped around in monkey suits in the music video? Rather...inappropriate, but hey, that was their only real hit (even though they came out with two more albums after that one).
