Suggestion [Main Site Translation]

Sat Nov 13, 2004 8:19 pm

I hope this is the right place to post this. If not, I'm very sorry.

I was thinking that since Neopets has 'gone international' to quote them, maybe PinkPT could 'go international' as well. Wouldn't it be cool if foreign users of Neopets could also use a foreign version of their favourite help site as well? Wouldn't it also help boost the amount of visitors PinkPT receives?

I understand SL is a busy kind of guy, but I really think it'd be worth the work to allow even more people to enjoy PinkPT and get the help they need. If translating is a problem, I'd gladly help.

Hmmm, translating every page would be a nightmare @_@ There's over 1,000 pages there. Does anyone have any site translation services they could suggest? I think it's a graet idea btw ^_^

I have far too much spare time, if that helps at all. :P

Using an online translator would work, but they often get bits wrong because it doesn't understand words in context. If you wanted to use a translator though, Google has a good one at http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en

You could also pay for a better translator, or you could find people who speak a certain language and let them translate the pages.

The problem with online translators is that is only translates the words, but doesn't rearrange them to make sense. For example, if you put in something in Spanish that meant the purple mountains are pretty, you might get something like mountains purple are pretty. (Sorry if I got that wrong, I'm terrible with languages.)

Well I speak fluent French, German, Italian and Spanish, so I could help out there. I'm a student of languages at college. And I wouldn't want paying for it. It'd be a laugh and it gives me something to do. :P

And you often find with languages that they do rearrange the words so that it wouldn't make sense to us, although in the other language it would make perfect sense. Why? I have no idea.

That's a really good idea and you're very clever Maverick! *is jealous*

Good idea... ;) It would be nice to read stuff in other languages :)

I could help as well with French. I'm not fluent so-to-speak but I have been in Extended French for 6 years!

I also could help with French. Well, it looks like we have plenty for French. xP

Hmm, I'm thinking more along the lines of an online translation service that allows me to place their code on PPT so when people click on the right flag... the whole site is automatically translated... I know there's problems inherent but it's the best option that seems plausible.

Maverick, I thank you for the offer. I really do. It's really apprecaited but It's highly unrealistic to get a person to translate 1000+ pages @_@ It'd be an ongoing nightmare. Not to mention all the new pages and updates I do constantly over all the pages... we're talking about an entire new level altogether.

The website translation service I talked about above in this post would be the most plausible. Granted... some grammar errors but it's better than nothing, and it's minimal fuss for on-the-fly translation.

Heh, that's cool.

Best bet there would probably be BabelFish. You can put a box that looks like this on your page:

You just click the flag and the page is translated.
