Virus Alert

Fri Jan 14, 2005 6:24 pm

Im not sure if this is the right place to post this but can someone please move it if its not.

I have just received a PM from another news poster who has received an email containing a virus from an email account very similar to mine. The email account was

mailto:ppt_xjoyx@lycos.com

and the email that I use when Im posting news is

mailto:ppt_xjox@lycos.com

Very similar, anywho, its not me and I never use that email address as it was only created because of posting the news as I didnt want to risk my normal email address being spammed!

So if anyone else gets an email claiming to be me, its not, I will only pm people on here unless i have already arranged with them to email them.

Very recently the same thing happened with me and Cae, when the admin e-mail account, Yukes, 'sent' us a virus. The best thing to do is run a virus scanner and delete it ASAP :)

Yeah, I remember that. That was a nasty backdoor virus. Good thing it was caught quickly.

If anyone gets this email, delete as soon as possible. Running a virus scan never hurts. Remember to keep your virus software up-to-date as well.

Yea, I've had a fair few emails claiming to be from *insanely loud cough* "PPT", but they've all had viruses in...I did get the one in question though, that was from ppt_xjoyx. I didn't think they'd go as far as pretending to be someone else

Hm..I don't have my email posted on here for a reason - a good reason, for that very purpose. But I will be sure to keep a close eye on my inbox. Thanks for the head up =)

You really will have to use more words than that when you post.

Sometimes a smilie expresses it better than a thousand words. :P BUt if you wish...

Shoyru_lover, I congratulate you on your highly-humourous post which had me rolling on the floor laughing (well, not literally, but figuratively... I don't roll on floors). When I first read that I had to stop to think whether you were joking or being serious. Also, the joke was effective because the punchline was right in the last word, and the happy-faced smilie at the end achieved an element of poker-faced innocence.

*conducts word count* There... about 70 words used for expressing my sincere appreciation and hearty approbation of a well-placed funny post. Hope that's enough. :)

EDIT: And as not to steer this off-topic, I shall express my concerns over this lamentable and disturbing issue of people passing off as PPT members and staff to send virus-laden emails to unsuspecting members. Xjox did commendably in alerting us in advance and I shall indeed take heed of the warning. *nods sagely*

Hah! That's funny. But actually, sometimes I do send e-mails to myself... with info I'll need for later or when I'm sending myself info I need to put on my other computor. I don't do it often, but sending e-mails to yourself is done. But the keywords, I guess, are 'I send e-mails to myself' not 'I'm getting e-mails from myself that I have never sent before'.

Hah, Ixistant... your funny. At least... you were joking weren't you?

Also, I would suggest that if anyone gets an e-mail from one of the supposed-staff-members, they should post it here first and ask if they sent that e-mail, or if someone else did. Just to be on the safe side.

I seem to recall a few times that I've had a few viruses sent apparently from myself. Just don't download attachments, and ignore any emails like this. They are not necessarily from the people who own the email.

Thanks for the heads up. I haven't got anything in the forum of a virus so far, but I'll definately keep my eyes open.

I'd leave that up to the Super Editors to make that decision.

Slight update:

I got a reply from Lycos customer services and they seem to think that its probably a program that is sending out these emails. Doesnt quite explain the coincidences though..

I also had an email saying that an email Im supposed to have sent (erm I dont use that account!) has not been delivered, this also seemed to be fake was from Mailer mailto:Daemon@blahblah.co.pg.jie. you get the idea! and Ive had 2 more emails with viruses in them. One of them had the title "Im nude"....sent by a blonde girl apparantly.... sorry girl but if its not Brad Pitt then it just aint worth it!

BTW the virus is W32/Lovgate-F

OK. Just finally checked this thread. And I ment it should go in the PI in YOUR article. Y'no, the one with the quotes. Or had you forgotten? And I wasn't kidding. Send me the virus'. Then I'll know what e-mail to send lots and lots of spam and other virus' to.
