I haven't used Windows Moviemaker in a long time but I believe there is a button called "publish" or something to that effect. Click that and follow through the steps.

When I tried to make a test movie from WMM, saving using the Web option, it is saved as a .WMV file. There are many free Video Converters available here for you to use to convert your files. I suggest filtering the results by License Type (choose "Free") so that you don't end up with trialware that only works for a couple weeks. At the top, choose either Sort by: Editor Rating or Sort by: Total Downloads in order to sort by the most popular or best software. Although I haven't personally used it, Any Video Converter seems like it would be a good pick. For file types YouTube accepts, go here.

Before trying any of the above:

YouTube Help wrote:
Windows Movie Maker, by default saves projects as .MSWMM files. These file are project files, which means it only tells Windows Movie Maker the layout of your video and does not contain the final video itself, and because of this, YouTube does not accept .MSWMM files. To upload your Windows Movie Maker video to YouTube, select the "Save to My Computer" option to save the file and upload the generated file.

http://www.zamzar.com/ is also a pretty good site I use every now and then to convert a file from one format to another.

Windows Movie Maker simply has a 'publish' function. That will publish it as a file type of your choice.

You can't convert a project file to a video file, without doing it via WMM.

What littleboy said. It's only possible to convert one video format to another video format if the original source is a video to begin with.

Ahhh, Windows Movie Maker, how I love thee. How have a much more impressive editor, but I still use you in order to make things work. Gah. <3

File conversion is serious business, especially when I only have footage in one type of file that isn't compatible with what I'm doing. Whenever I want to convert a file, I use Media Converter, though I may have to use the above mentioned Zamzar and see if it's any better.
