My upstairs computer is ancient. It's so old, I had to add the word 'internet' to spellcheck. Anyway, my monitor is finally starting to blow, and once it does I'll have no way to access the files in the CPU. That means losing 5 years worth of my writing. I tried to move everything to the new computer via floppy disk, but XP isn't recognizing it whenever I try to open it.

Is there any way I can transfer my files to my other computer without using a floppy disk or a USB device?

Pull the hard disk out of the case and plug it into the new PC?

Need to power down both cases, extract the old HD, find IDE and power cables in the new PC, check the master / slave status on the devices attached to the cable (there can be only one master and only one slave), and plug HD thing in. Moderately difficult, but you may be able to find someone able to assist you.

if it has win 98 (maybe 95) or above, and a PCI slot in the computer, you can buy a 10 dollar ethernet card and 5 feet of cable. move the comps next to eachother and hook 'em up. however, you might not have a supportive OS.

so what OS do you have?

It runs Win95, no internet access. The computer I want to move everything to is WinXP.

Could you try a CD instead of a floppy disk?

Is XP refusing to read the format of the disk or is it the files?

If it's just the files, make all the docs into text files. This can be read by both 95 and XP. Transfer the txt files into XP by floppy. I know this could take a long time to do, but I hope you manage to get it done before u can't see what's on there.
