what i usually do to convert music files is make an html file like this one:<a href="file:file location">a</a>
and then just save that target as, and make the filename extension whatever it needs to be

You can change Windows Media Player settings to make it rip CDs to MP3s rather than the native format. Tools -> Options -> Rip Music -> Rip Settings -> Format.
