My cousin came to my house with his laptop. He has a lot of songs in his iTunes account, and since we both just got iPods, I want to get his songs and vice versa. I set up a wireless LAN between the two computers. Here's the deal:
I can't get his computer's info when I go to My Network Places>View Workgroup Computers (or something like that)
In iTunes, when we both have it open, I can see his playlist in my menu as Jon-Alec's Music, but it has a lock symbol on it. When I click to open it, it flashes and doesn't let me do it.
When my brother's account is logged in, Jon-Alec (cousin) can see his music as Johnny's Music on his computer, and can get into the list but cannot import any of the songs. Johnny can see Jon-Alec's playlist in the same way I can, with the lock on it, and can't access it.
I'm assuming this has something to do with the file sharing permissions, but I don't know what to change. Anyone know? It's greatly appreciated, but my cousin is leaving tomorrow so sooner is better. Thanks!

i dont know much about itunes, but if you want to just copy the files, you need to go to the folder and right click and select the "sharing" tab, then say "shared as" etc etc
I dont know if that will help with the itunes stuff, but you should at least be able to copy the files across using windows explorer that way (i'm assuming you're using windows).

If there's a firewall, turn it off.

you dont need to turn it off, just add the other computer's IP to your safe list

That was what I tried to do earlier, but it wouldn't let me access his computer through My Network Places (dumb Microsoft name). I'll try it again today and see if I can get it to work.
I did try turning off the network firewall on both computers. I don't think that's a security problem because I've got a wireless router anyway, but I'll put it back on afterwards just in case.

Try just connecting each others iPods to each others computers and inporting/exporting te songs. Would that work?

For some reason, I thought it said, "Snog sharing over land," and I first wondered why it was in the computing forum, and then wondered what section of the video store you'd rent that in...
Anyway.
If your internet connection uses a router, just plug your friend's computer into the router. Disable firewalls on both computers, and make sure that each computer is set up through the network properties (Right Click "my network") dialogs. It SHOULD work.

It's iTunes and Apples fault I heard somewhere that they restricted that kind of sharing between two people with iPods.

Shapu, you made me laugh so hard!
I still haven't been able to make it work, sadly. I guess I'll just give up on this for now. Thanks to everyone who offered advice!
