Well, it's about a flat world that rests on the backs of four elephants that stand on the back of a giant turtle that swims through space. It's a place where magic makes more sense than science. There are books about various residents of the Discworld, which are mostly unconnected with each other. For the most part, the books stand alone.
It makes a lot more sense if you just read them. They're really funny and just great to read.
The Colour of Magic is the first one, but I recommend
Small Gods or
Guards! Guards! to start out.
