Habits you've noticed

Have you ever noticed that a lot of authors have habits? Not necessarily bad, just habits? XD For example: Mercedes Lackey seems to love using the word 'sardonic' and 'hmm'. Like I said, it's not bad, it simply seemed to jump out at me.

anyone else have any 'habits' they've noticed? XD

Anne Rice LOVES the word "preternatural." All of K.A. Applegate's ghostwriters had a thing for the phrase "not exactly." Tolkien goes overboard on exclamation points. Personally, I've got a crush on dramatic hyphens.

Some time ago, I was reading Tamora Pierce (The Circle Opens - Tris' book), and I remembered being quite annoyed at the number of times she used "retorted". Even my 11 year old sister picked up on that. >.<

JKR and the word 'muttered'. I'm going to go through OotP someday and count how many times she used it...

R.A. Salvatore and "refuting logic," even when it's not logic but some kind of honorable choice. R.A. Salvatore and stressing, over and over, that Briza is the eldest sister and that Vierna is the middle sister, adding "Briza Do'Urden" to my mushpot of names that form the Specifically Nasty Voice in my Head. Kefka Torrez. Adrienne Cooper Soprano. Despite the fact that Vierna's barely better than the rest of 'em. But enough of that.

Lemony Snicket and patronizing, clueless adults who all talk the exact same way. JKR and capslock. C.S. Lewis and metaphorical mallets. All I can think of right now.

(Never seen The Sopranos. It's just the mafia concept. Family. Omerta.
The Godfather. I've never seen The Godfather either.)

Haha, I remember alternating between amusement and annoyance whenever he was nervous and his Adam's apple bobbed. Although that may have actually just happened once.

I thought of those two instantly. The first is just overly-annoying. The second isn't as bad, though it's close.

I don't know if anyone here's read and of the Biggles books, but Biggles is always saying things 'cooly' and 'crisply' and walking about 'purposefully'.

Tolkien's favorite words are "Grey", "Fell", "Grey", "Fey", "Grey", and "and".
And Grey.

Brian Jacques probably used to make a living making people with severe dehydration's mouths water. I mean... there's a Huge Scrumptious and Painfully Detailed feast or two... or four... in every book!

And Rowling likes describing otherwise alarming problems with Harry's internal organs.

Paul Stewart seems to love the word 'dapple'. :roll:

Edit: Paul Stewart also says quite often "Tear you limb from limb" "Tear him limb from limb"...along those lines.

J.K Rowling describes everything a bit to much. She always uses and extra 2 or 3 words to describe how someone was smiling, or walking ect.
