Looking For a Good Comedy Book

Tue Jan 25, 2005 2:01 am

Well, I'm out of books. I've been re-reading series and novels over and over again untill I know page numbers and direct quotes. >.< Well, I figure I'm in the mood for a comedy book. Doesn't matter what kind of humor, I just want to laugh. :)

I recommend all of Patrick McManus' books on the outdoors. He's quite funny :) Among his books that I own are How I Got This Way, Never Sniff a Gift Fish, The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw, The Deer on the Bicycle, The Grasshopper Trap. That's all I can think of right now. Ooh, also A Fine and Pleasant Misery and They Shoot Canoes, Don't They?

Quite good and funny books, all of them. Doesn't really matter where you start, perhaps How I Got This Way is a good place to start.

Anything by good old P.G. Wodehouse gets me laughing. If you understand English humor, or want to, his books are enriched with it. I also reccomend Terry Pratchett, though he sometimes can be crude.

I'll second the nominations already made, but if you haven't yet met The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, get it!

Also -- even better than one "Far Side" cartoon at a time is the cumulative effect of one after another after another. I recommend the one in which Gary Larson includes his favorites, his rejections, his pointing out of his own errors, and a sampling of "The Wild Side" or whatever his prior animal-related comic was called. I think the book is The Far Side Gallery, but I won't swear to it.

I'll also testify that you don't have to be an outdoors-type (past, present, or future) to find McManus a riot.

If you're going for the Far Side, The Complete Far Side is so worth the enormous price tag. ::hugs it::

Other than that, I'd say go with HHGTTG. =)

I also recommend Hitchhiker's Guide and Terry Pratchett.

i don't know if this is what you're going for, but i couldn't stop laughing when i read catch 22.

P.J. O'Rourke's Parliament of smurf is a riot if you don't mind being lightly insulted. It's pretty much libertarian, so you probably will be at some point.

Some of the short stories in Sharyn McCrumb's Foggy Mountain Breakdown are really funny. Some, however, are total angst-fests. The letter correspondence between an obscure writer and a reader I highly recommend, even if I can't remember its name.

I don't recommend Terry Pratchett; he puts me straight to sleep. Most people disagree, though.

Try the Georgia Nicholson series by Louise Rennison. They're absolutely hilarious. :roflol:

Hehe, glad to meet a fan. Those are one of my favorite book series, ever. Nip-libbling, Mark the Gob, Dave the Laugh, the SG, Radio Jas...ahh, such a great series.

I've never read The Far Side or the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I've heard of them though. Hmmm, maybe I'll check those out next time I take a ride to the bookstore.

:P I recommend the Thursday Next series. It starts with The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde. It's about a woman who is a Special Operations agent in the literary department. It's a serious book, but it's funny. :P Like, here is an exerpt from the third book (Pickwick is a pet dodo of Thursday):

"Sarcasm is better explained through humor," put in Gram, who had been watching my efforts with interest. "You know that Pickwick isn't too clever?"
Pickwick stirred in her sleep where she had fallen, resting on her head with her claws in the air.
"Yes, we know that," replied ibb and obb, who were nothing if not observant.
"Well, if I were to say that it is easier to get yeast to perform tricks than Pickwick, I'm using mild sarcasm to make a joke."
"Yeast?" queried ibb. "But yeast has no intelligence."
"Exactly," replied Gran. "So I am making a sarcastic observation that Pickwick has less brainpower than yeast. You try."
The Generic *they'll explain what those are in the book :P* thought long and hard.
"So," said ibb slowly, "how about... Pickwick is so clever she sits on the TV and stares at the sofa?"
"It's a start," said Gran.
"And," added ibb, gaining confidence by the second, "if Pickwick went on Mastermind, she'd do best to choose 'dodo eggs' as her specialist subject."
obb was getting the hang of it, too. "If a thought crossed her mind, it would be the shortest journey on record."
"Pickwick has a brother at Oxford. In a jar."

very, very true. I love being outside but I've never been into hunting/fishing/camping, and I still find all his books hilarious. I've read them so many times that I have to hide them under my bed until I forget the jokes :roflol:

I also agree with whoever said the Georgia Nicholson books. That series has some of few books that consistently and often make me laugh out loud. The other books that make me laugh out loud would be McManus' :D

edit - :o ARGH!!!!!!!!!! I was so busy answering this topic that I forgot I bought the item for Illusen's Quest and I ran out of time and now I'm at the beginning and I was only at level 10 but argh. :x

Hehe, I love the German teacher. He sounds crazy. Georgia is probably the most original characters ever, she's as mad as a badger and a loon on loon tablets...
