This. Book. Is. Awesome! It's basically a collection of legends, folk tales, anecdotes, etc. about all sorts of weird things across America, such as aliens, cryptozoological creatures, ghosts, criminals, etc. Has anyone else read it?

Some of my favorite stories:

* Stull Cemetary, where there was once a church where legend has it if you threw a glass bottle against its wall and it shattered, it meant you were going to hell. If it didn't, it meant you were going to heaven, and I guess God forgives you for THROWING BOTTLES AGAINST CHURCHES!

* The sinister-looking Devil's Tree, which is purportedly impossible to chop down. If you attempt to (as many have), a demon chases you away in a black pickup truck.

* The Bell Witch, a supposedly violent spirit who harrassed a family by slapping and insulting them 24/7 and supposedly scared Andrew Jackson away as well!

* Anton LaVey, leader of the Church of Satan, who in this book is shown wearing a rather fetching fetish outfit, lol. His "Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth" aren't all bad; some include "Do not harm little children" and my personal favorite "Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal." LOL

* Centralia, a town literally on fire...underground fires fueled by the remains of coal mining occasionally swallow entire parts of the town. One boy was playing outside when the ground opened up from underneath him...he barely got away. The government is paying for people to get the hell out of there, but you know people are stubborn...

* Byberry Mental Hospital, the Staten Island abandoned monastery, and other abandoned places that are supposedly haunted and probably a blast to explore.

High five, Chrome. ^_^ I'm a big Weird US and Weird NJ fan. And heh, since I live in New Jersey it's awesome to drive around to some of the places, get freaked out and drive back home in silence. I actually met Mark and Mark (the authors) at my local Barnes and Noble. They signed my copy of the huge Weird NJ book. And in real life, they are awesome people.

And the Devil's Tree, that thing is NUTS! I know some people who have gone there and have their own stories to tell about the big black truck and how snow never falls around it. :>

Actually I think it's exclusive to Barne's and Nobel, if I remember. But you should get it, it's sooo fun. Excellent for a nice nighttime read.

Sorrow, I am jealous! I never get to go to any crazy abandoned places; there really aren't any in my area. I guess I'll have to wait til "Weird TX" comes out so I can scope out any local haunts or mental hospitals or whatnot.

And Anna...yes! Go get it! Right now!

Ah yes, you should be jealous. :P Some girls who used to sit at my lunch table visited one of the abandoned insane asylums and brought back pictures. The pictures didn't come out so good, but you just got a vibe off of them that something wasn't right.

I used to hate living in New Jersey untill I discovred Weird NJ. My friend lent me a couple issues and suddenly I had pride for my definetley strange state.

I wish there were Weird TX, Weird NY, Weird NH, everything. I hope this moves to other countries too. What everyone needs is a good old urban legend to get the dall rolling.

lol! Darn straight we're stubborn, that's America for ya. Oh, and I agree. Abandoned places are a blast to explore, but a pain in the butt to enter sometimes.

I heard that they're making "Weird TX," "Weird FL," and I think "Weird OH." I guess they have to pick and choose places with a whole lot of strange attractions. NJ definitely tops the list!

Ooh, good a Weird FL. My friend will enjoy that, as she just moved from New Jersey to Florida.
And I just realized I wrote 'get the dall rolling.' Bah, typos.

So let's say they do Weird TX, will it be available to buy in New Jersey? I would love to read it, even if it wasn't even remotley close to me.
