I know a drummer named Jonas... it'd be very scary if we both knew the same person.

Oh this is hard....I could have a massive band. *shrug*
Melissa Auf Der Maur - Bass
Brody Dalle - Guitar
Meg White - Drums
Paz Lenchantin - Violin
I can't choose who would sing vocals in this band, but I have a few possibilites.
Karen O - Vocals
Alanis Morissette - Vocals
Katie Jane Garside - Vocals
Jessicka (from Jack Off Jill) - Vocals.
*nods* Yeah, that would be my girl rock band. Doing a boy rock band is too hard, I mean, Billie Joe Armstrong would be in there, and so would Dave Grohl, but there's too many great male artists to choose from!

Sure would, but I doubt it since this guy's like 12 or 13.

Do they all need to be dead, or does it just happen to work that way for yours?
In any case, I'd have to say...
On guitar:
Stevie Ray Vaughn, BB King and Eric Clapton
On Drums:
Keith Moon
Bass:
Paul McCartney
Male Vocals:
I like your call on Freddy Mercury, clearly one of the most talented rock tenors EVER!
Female Vocals:
Stevie Nicks
Maybe some back up vocals by Pete Townsend and John Lennon, just so I can get their song writing and Pete's guitar in there too.

I would be the only person in my band. I would play each instrument part, then record them together. No one would want to listen to me, though. Because I stink.

You stole 4 of my dream band members!
Great taste
George Harrison would be good, too
EDIT: And Clapton too! And Bob Dylan! (for songwriting and weird accent
)

Excellent topic! I've always thought about this but never written it out. I promise any repeats are purely coincidental (you know what they say about great minds)
Guitar- Jeff Beck
Bass- Sting
Lead Vocals- Freddie Mercury
Backing Vocals- Geddy Lee & Gerard Way
Drums- John Bonham
It'd be interesting to see what kind of music this group would've made, and more interesting to see how having Way and Lee would
work out.

I've never paid much attention to the separate instrumentalists in bands, not knowing a ton about music myself, but this is who I can think of off the top of my head:
Vocals: Leonard Cohen, Karan Casey, Jennifer Nettles, Ella Fitzgerald (hmm, need a tenor to round it out)
Fiddle: Natalie MacMaster (because she can play behind her back while dancing -- how cool is that?)
Cello: Yo-Yo Ma
Concertina: my friend Erica (she's the only concertina player I know, and it's a beautiful instrument)
Keyboard: Robert O'Sullivan (from Possum Dixon -- just because his is the only keyboard I've really noticed in songs)
Guitar: ?
Bass: ?
Drums: ?
Bodhrán: ?
Eclectic additions (mandolin, didgeridoo, uilleann pipes, tin whistle): ?
Songwriters: Bono, songwriter(s) of Possum Dixon, composer(s) of Sublime, lyricist of Pavement
Wow, I've no idea what kind of music that group would put together, but it'd be interesting!

Ben Folds - Piano, Vocals
Dan Deacon - Synthesizer, "Vocals"
Victor Wooten - Bass, Vocals
I'm a man of three piece bands, and with talented fellows like this, it's pretty much all you need.
