Question for older PPTers on West Side Story song.

Tue Aug 23, 2005 11:05 pm

A while ago, there was this one oldies radio station that I used to listen to that had an awesome selection of music. Unfortunately, it is no more. But that's beside the point. Back when I used to listen to it, every once in a great while, I'd hear the song "Somewhere" from West Side Story, except it wouldn't be the original version from the play/movie. It was sung solely by a guy and had a bit of a faster beat.

Problem is... I have no clue who sang it. Any help would be extremely appreciated, thanks!

I'm not old, but I studied music history. =P

If I'm talking about the same thing you're talking about, West Side Story is a musical, and it is written by Leonard Bernstein.

Actually, that's pretty much all I remember, I didn't study it much. If I can find my music history textbook, I might be able to find more information about this.

Yeah, I knew all that, I just need the name of the artist who re-did the song in the 60s or so.

Thank you!

Edit: Listens to it... hmmm, I seemed to remember it being faster than this... did anyone else do it? (maybe I'm just not remembering correctly, and plus, I only found a clip of it, not the whole song)

Not that I'm aware- I asked my dad who released it in the 60s, and that's who he came up with. Since he is really into 60's music from his youth.

Okay, it probably is the right one, the clip must just not catch the full essence of the song. Thanks!

Perhaps- although that can happen....Whenever I hear Bake Street by Gerry Rafferty on the radio, the speed is always ever so slightly faster than that of the single. hey hum.

actually, gimme a sec here.... im a musical freak and have every version of every musical song ever.... i think i know exactly what you are talking about!... i love listening to that version too.... one of my favorites is "morning glow" which is a song originally from pippin, which i have have an mp3 of with michael jackson singing it when he was still dark skinned.... :) its amazing.... so anyway, to keep on topic, lemme go find this... i know ive got it..

EDIT: well, there WAS A period where i was making room on my computer by shoving tons of musicals onto CD's... so im actually have trouble finding it, but I actually think the version you are looking for is indeed by Larry Kert. Either that, or its Carlos Barbosa.
