Well not really. Ashlee is lipsynching her own voice (well as far as we know) and that's nothing new. Britney does it, Janet does it. The difference is, Milli Vanilli were two models, on stage, dancing and lipsynching to tracks recorded by two other guys.
They were just figureheads, pretty faces. They won a Grammy for Best New Artist, but then during a live performance, the record started skipping. The song was meant to go "Girl you know it's true, oo oo oo, I love you."
Well, the song started skipping and went "Girl you know it- Girl you know it- Girl you know it-" And so on. It would have been bad enough if they had just been lipsynching. But then it was revealed that the music they were lipsynching to wasn't even their own voices. And so they became the first "artists" ever to be stripped of a Grammy.
I see. But I don't think this situation with Ashlee is a true Milli Vanilli moment because it's not like the voice she is lyp-synching is not hers. She doesn't even sound that good in her recording songs.
Exactly. It's fun to make fun of her (I didn't like her in the first place) but like I said in my very first post on this thread. I'm not surprised that she was lip synching. I
am surprised that everyone is so shocked though. Artists lip synching at their live performances is
nothing new. They just don't usually get caught.
Other differences: most singers that lip synch do so because the dancing and vigorous performances are more than half the act, and the harder you're moving, the harder it is to sound good. I don't consider that as cheating the audience.
If I bought a ticket to go see Britney Spears, I would know that she would be lipsynching. It's blatantly obvious with her. And I wouldn't feel cheated. Because I would know that's what I should expect. And if I bought a ticket to see Linkin Park, I would expect real live music, because I know that that's what they do.
When the fan buys the ticket, they're buying the opportunity to see the singer in person, and see the person performing, even if the performance is just lip synching and live dancing to prerecorded music. You're still getting a show.
But correct me if I'm wrong. Ashlee doesn't really do anything when she's on stage. She moves a little, but it's not really anything entertaining. So that makes it slightly more silly that she's lipsynching. But still no huge shocker. She's not the first to do it, and she won't be the last.
The disgraceful thing she did do, is to not own up to it. First she blamed her band. And then (her dad) used a medical condition as an excuse. If she had just admitted to it and apologized, then it wouldn't be so bad.
Bringing back Britney Spears as an example. If her record started skipping during a 'live' performance, or the wrong song started playing. I don't think as big of a deal would be made, because you'd have to be deaf (or musically illiterate) to not be able to tell that she always lipsynchs. Everyone knows and no one cares. Because it's not like she's really making a huge deal to try to convince the audience that she's
really singing live.
Ashlee can overcome this if she owns up, and the whole world moves on. And if the next time she's supposed to perform live it happens again, she can shrug it off with a laugh and continue, because like Britney, it will be expected of her.
