Just went to the cinema last night to see something else. Nearly $20 just for tickets for my husband and I. There's no way I can afford to see a movie that I know absolutely nothing about (still haven't seen a single preview, and the one poster in the cinema wasn't even as big as my calendar). Perhaps I'll rent it once it comes out. Although probably not as my husband and my other movie-watching friend both hate musicals, and I find it very unejoyable to watch movies alone.

Oh well. Still want to see it on stage someday, though.

Oh, how I remember the days when I had a RENT set and dozens of people PMed me asking "What the heck does 'Today 4 U' mean?" Ahh, how things change. ;)

I saw the movie last night, and frankly, I was just amazed. I had a few gripes, though: my biggest one has to do with the cutting of songs. If you're going to SAY some of the lyrics, why not just sing them? One of the best parts of Rent is that, in the show, the songs are part song and part tuned dialogue. In "Chicago", it was only songs, so maybe Chris Columbus just wanted real songs, instead of 'halfers' (as some of us Broadway fanatics call them)? Who knows.

Anyways, though, it was fantastic. I brought along 5 friends who had never seen or heard it before, and three ended up crying, while 2... enjoyed it. Lol.

2 thumbs up, guys. :)

I'd been waiting for this movie for a year, roughly. Since I heard rumors about someone actually taking the time to make it. I was AMAZED. I cried so much. Basically from Without You until...the end. I'm sad because the cut the ending of Goodbye Love and they completetely cut Halloween. But it was so good. I think the play and the movie are both good in their own ways. One's not really better than the other. They're just different. I amd upset that they were speaking parts that are sung on stage, but that's okay. It was still a fabulous movie.

Nothing like that.

The one transition that was weird was from the first part of Goodbye Love to What You Own. Very sudden and could have benefitted by a bit of a buffer such as Halloween or the last parts of Goodbye Love.

Also, the single moment of excessive cheese was Roger walking in the desert and climbing mountains.

Other than that, brilliant!!!!

So yeah, I just got back and..uh...yeah...man tears.

But besides that...WOW. Just, it was. Wow. I don't know. I went with two friends who had not seen the play or heard any of the songs, and they were crying more than I was when I'll Cover You reprise came on. They loved Angel, and thought the characters were done with incredible depth.

I had heard a lot of complaints, but, from the stand point of a guy who knew all the lines but had never seen the play: It was good. Some of the subplots, like Mark's detachment were left a little askew, but it was made up for in his physical nature (he was always to the side of the screen, I found. Never really went near couples).

The complaints about awkward transitions were entirely unfounded, Amen Steve. I thought it was brilliant how they went between songs. The only slightly odd transition was the one you mentioned--Goodbye Love to What You Own, I have to agree. Though, there was less Mountain prancing than I had been led to believe.

One other slightly awkward scene was the end of Another Day. When the keep switching between Roger & the company, and then Roger...then the company... the Roger... then the company. It was a good unintended laugh.

otherwise... wow.

wow...

wow.

the main reason it's akward is because many of the song transitions were added for the movie, so it made the movie seem too slow for me.

I can't fully express how much I loved Rent.

It's my favourite movie and musical now. Ever.

I've seen it twice already. It is the shizzle.

I'm planning to see it a third time on Thursday.

I signed in to my account at 11:03 pm on Mon Jan 05, 2009. My last visit beforehand was Thu Dec 01, 2005 at 10:26 pm. Um....wow.

Everyone was raving to me about how this was such an amazing movie and so I saw it and I'm afraid I have to agree - that was one of the best, if not the best, movies I have ever seen. That was seriously..wow.

Finally, after unsuccessfully trying to go SIXE (count 'em, six..) times, I've seen it.

Best experience of my life...

I was tearing up 30 seconds in.

During the reprise of "I'll Cover You", my friend, her brother, and me were pretty much crying all over each other. -sniff-

Brilliant.

Only problem I had in the entire thing was Mimi's "death" scene. It's just like...
-fingers twitch-
-sits up, perfectly well-

A bit abrupt, is all. But, yeah. Excellent movie.
