The Phantom of the Opera!

Mon Nov 22, 2004 11:10 am

Coming to the big screen one month from now! I might be the only Phantom fan around here, but I'm so excited for this! I absolutely love the play, and I'm really hopeful that the movie will be as fantastic. I adore Emmy Rossum, so it'll be really cool to see her play Christine. :)

It's not playing anywhere too close to me. But my boyfriend and I are thinking about making the trip to see it in Allentown PA. :)

Really? I hate the Phantom of the Opera. I read it french and watched the movie in english -- worse book and film ever.

Ah... but dearest Ammer, this is the musical of it. Turned to film.

But Sarah Brightmans not playing Christine.
Thusly my hopes are dashed for a semi decent singing cast.

Oh a musical you say? Well, the movie I saw was a horror movie and I hate horror movies in general. Perhaps this might be good.

No no, this film is based entirely on the play itself. :) Tis why I'm so excited, because the play is spectacular.

Inrun, I was also a little disappointed that Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman weren't cast as the leads, and I do have to admit that I'm not entirely optimistic about Gerard Butler's (Terry Sheridan in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider- The Cradle of Life) portrayal of the Phantom. But I'm still hopeful that - despite the younger cast - it'll meet my expectations. :D

Jennifer Ellison? :roflol: Says it all.

I'm really not expecting much from this. :P

Personally, I'm kind of happy they went with a younger cast.

Don't get me wrong, Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman are fabulous, but they're not the only talented singers in the world, nor are the only ones capable of playing the role.

I would argue, in fact, that those who are not familiar with those actors will be more drawn in by a younger cast and there is a greater opportunity for them to be touched by the magic of the production.

Haha, I've seen it already *gloats*
:P

Yeah... I haven't seen the musical, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I thought it was really good. The cinematography was gorgeous, and all the actors did a good job both with the singing and the parts, although since there was mostly singing, the plot was a little hard to follow for me. There was also one version of "Phantom of the Opera" that sounded like rock, and even though it was cool, it sounded very out-of-place. Overall definite thumbs up though - and yay for musicals coming back to the big screen!

(Coolest part of the experience: I got to see the director, 3 main characters, and Andrew Lloyd Webber in a Q&A after the screening. And the guy who plays the Phantom is Glaswegian, which I for some reason find hilarious.)

Oh Starchaser, you lucky!! *is choking with envy* lol

That sounds like a really awesome experience. :)

I beg to differ. A lot of books and films are worse.

I've always associated it as a musical - I saw it once when I was 10 or so.
