Any idea what the name of this show is?

I remember watching it as a kid before school started (1994 era). It was on early in the morning (6am-ish) on the Sci-Fi Channel somewhere between "The Thunderbirds" and "The New Adventures of Gigantor". It was about some kind of space war, there were "mech" like fighting machines used for fighting too. The only scene I can clearly recall with corresponding dialoge is there is a small group of persons walking through a forest on some planet, when all of a sudden, a bunch of leeches fall from the trees onto them and the women in the group scream, "LEECHES" while one of the men who was smoking a cigarette burned them off calmly.

Most characters lived on board of a space station.

I want to say it has a Robotech/Mobile Battleship Nadesico feel to it, but it was so long ago I can't be sure
