I'm a cheapo, but I have the cash at the moment. Should I buy the sword and will it serve me well in the battle?

I would recomment the melting mirror instead, it does the same amount of icons but is much cheaper.

SS is a good weapon and is one I wouldn't worry about being downgraded.

That would really depend on how the rest of your set looks. If you've got two multiple use items already, you may want to look into upgrading it to Blood Grub, Ummagine Battle Muffin, or even as far as Honey Potion.
