Yes, If the yards there are like the yards here, you pay a nominal admission fee, take in your own tools, and remove the parts you need. Then, you pay for the parts you take. They usually have set pricing for everything, so you can check their website to see (or call ahead and ask) what they charge for a console. It seems that it does not matter what car it comes from - one price for all models. I remember a youtube video how to remove/replace the 200x Prius center radio/nav unit. Looked to be pretty straightforward without fancy tools. Definitely worth watching a few times before attempting.

You can see what inventory of cars is available on their websites. The trick is to find a yard that has the vehicle you need. It can a be tricky timing thing. Out here, LKQ Pick Your Part is where I go. They appear to have a location in Fayetteville, but they have no Priuses. There is also "Pull-A-Part" in Atlanta area.... and Their Atlanta East location just happens to have a 2005 Prius that was put onto the lot on 7/27... Good for pickin' :)

Assuming it is all one unit (radio, nav, cd, etc.) you could argue, er. suggest that is is just a Radio with Nav unit... price is just under 50 and no core charge. Considering what it is, you may want to pay for an extended warranty (LKQ is $16 for these). If it doesn't work, you can take it back for refund. But if you don't buy the warranty, it is as-is... being able to test it might be tricky, since the battery (and all fluids) are removed from the cars.

Terrible round so far, except for the fact that I've gotten no RLB so far.

Thanks, Blue! That all sounds pretty doable. I wonder if my guy friend (who's in my bubble, and is a pilot, so is still working reduced hours right now, often going weeks at a time - he's only in the bubble after being home for a while!) would enjoy coming with me. He might have done this before, and he enjoys this stuff. (He's the one who helped me replace the right turn light on my old car.) It'd be helpful to have the moral support (and brute strength). And maybe his 5yo would enjoy tagging along... (I'm the 5yo's best friend, though I don't expect that to last much longer!)

They're definitely separate units. Hmm. It might be worth getting the top unit, too... but there's no guarantee it actually has the sat-nav (which I never used, anyway), so maybe I could convince them to charge me less, assuming it doesn't. Do we have to worry about accidentally breaking the plastic pieces? If we don't, should I take them, too, just in case I accidentally break my own? I could see myself stripping cars and collecting pieces "just in case." Or reselling them online for those not willing to go to junkyards... For the Prius, it's probably not actually a bad idea! Though obviously I'd want to test anything I stripped to make sure it works before the warranty runs out.

Siniri, if the pilot is willing to go, that would be great. The moral support is always good. It is also helpful to have a second set of hands and body. It can easily happen that you left something in your car and the 2nd person can stand guard over your tools and the car you are working on. In general, do not worry about accidentally breaking stuff while doing the removal at the junk yard. Some people will absolutely destroy everything in their way to get what they want. You only pay for what you take home. Taking the extra pieces would be cheap insurance, but it is also a trap... You might buy a lot more than you need. I have 2 junk carburetors and a vacuum switch manifold "just in case" that I bought because they seemed like a good idea at the time. Actually, the second carb that I bought had a special part (working on the junk, but not on mine), so I did need a piece of it, and it was just almost cheap to buy the whole thing as buying the one part. The first one was for practice on a few things I was not sure about. I considered that one as the "educational" unit. I did learn a bunch from it - mostly the "oh crap. don't do that" sort of learning... so I do not really think of it as wasted money. Rather, money well spent to not ruin my "good" unit.

But... if the clips/plastic parts are part of the unit itself, leave them attached, or re-attach them to the unit before heading to the cashier. If the top and bottom unit can be attached together when removed... put them together. That way, it is "one unit", not a two separate units and a bunch of individually priced clips/screws/etc. ;)

Then again, if the cashier is super-savvy and in a foul mood, they may still charge for the separate pieces. Luck of the draw sometimes. The cashiers in a good mood are awesome. "Hmm. Not sure what that is. I'll just charge you for a foot of hose... " That was a good day.

Well... My friend is currently quarantining for COVID-19 because his mom came to visit and came down with it. I was over at their house two days before she got ill (they helped me out in a pinch when my power went out the day I had to take an exam, and my study materials were online) - but I wore a mask while in the room with her, kept my distance, barely interacted with her, and spent the vast majority of my time there closed into a room on the opposite side of the house, and left as soon as my power came back (after about two hours). I felt a little bad at the time treating her like she was infected (she'd just flown in)... and now I feel guilty for maybe not doing enough (I took the mask off while studying, and wore a cloth mask instead of an N95)! I'm hoping the rest of the family doesn't catch it. Right now, his mom isn't too sick.

Honestly, we should probably wait until the fall to go busting into broken cars in Georgia, anyway... And I've got other things higher on my priority list. I've gotten pretty used to not having a working radio! And eaudiobooks were available the last 6 months in a way that CD audiobooks were not!

Yep.. BLB Buddies. That's us

Siniri, Good idea on waiting. If you have become used to zero radio, then certainly wait until it is cooler outside. I probably lost quart or more of water* on one of the days I was at the pick-a-part last summer.

*For full disclosure, I have no clue how much water I lost. Quart seemed like a fun quantity :)
