Wow, Blue. That happened to me once when I was waitressing. Because it was such a large party, I only had one other small table for the night, and I averaged less than $3/hour. Hopefully there were other people who made up for the cheat.

I hear you, Siniri. That stinks, too.
I assume your big party had the "standard" 18% gratuity tacked onto their tab, but they sucked up your whole night and you couldn't make up the loss of the other tables.

I saw it coming because, sadly, I know the type from experience. However, I still gave him the great service that I give to everyone. I think his kids/grandkids know that he does this. His son ran up an even bigger tab and tipped very well at the end of the night.

Nope. We had no minimum tip for large parties. I got $5 for 2.5 hours slaving away for a table of 15; the other tip was (appropriately) about the same, but my shift was ~5 hours or so. Thankfully that kind of thing only happened a handful of times. The other memorable ones:

A group of coworkers on lunch break (from an office) got separate tabs. Most tipped well, but one didn't pay at all, so it went from a great lunch service to a mediocre one (but with three times the usual hustle). I still can't believe someone would stiff the waitress in front of their coworkers. Had I caught the name of the company, I'd have called them and asked to speak to the gentleman who ordered the X.

The family that left me, in lieu of a tip, a prayer card with a message telling me how to "find Jesus" and that they'd pray for me (no, they never actually talked to me about anything more than the food, and their actions made it harder for me to find Him in that moment!)

The man who kept bellowing my name from across the restaurant like he was calling his cow while I was with other tables (no, I hadn't messed up their order, and I had not been in any way neglecting them - he did actually leave a decent tip)

I have a couple of acquaintances who calculate their tip based on what everyone else left and what they think we should leave as a group, but I'm an excellent tipper, and that's for the server, not to save my friends money, so I try to be one of the last people to pay. If I'm ordering less (e.g. dessert when everyone else is having a meal), I'll tip based on what a typical person would order (sometimes exceeding what I actually spent).

There's one restaurant I can't eat at (cross contamination in the kitchen triggered my skin allergies last time I ate there), so I drank from my water bottle during a watch party. Even though the server only interacted with me once, I still left a tip, because I know how tables are allocated. I really think everyone should have to work in the service industry at least once.

We generally tip well - unless the service is SUPER terrible. We still tip then, but definitely not as much as we would otherwise.

There have been times when we had an automatic tip (due to party size or special discount) where the waiter/waitress CLEARLY lowered their level of service AFTER they realized they'd get the guaranteed 18%, meanwhile treating tables around us MUCH better. Yes, we still got our food, but often times they wouldn't check on us at all other than that (even when we've run out of something to drink, etc), meanwhile bringing refills for other people around us, spending time being friendly and chatting with them, etc, etc. If I have to flag down another waiter/waitress because you've literally ignored us? (Yes, this has happened SEVERAL times - to the point where sometimes I've tried to flag down our own waiter/waitress and they've ignored us and I have had to get someone else in order to get a drink refilled or what not. Once, it was just to get the check!) Yeah, you know you're getting a guaranteed amount, but you obviously don't care about anything more than that and you make it obvious? ...yeah. You get what you work for. The worst part? They know they're expected to treat everyone with the same level of service, but some of them just don't do it for anyone who has the required 18% attached to their check. It always bums me out when that happens.

It just always astounds me how quickly a waiter/waitress can change tactics from "I'm going to do my best like I always do" to "Oh, they've got a minimal required tip, I don't have to work as hard." I can see where they've probably gotten burned in the past, only getting the 18% when they've given it there all, but...that automatic assumption that someone's only going to do the required, and giving service accordingly? It's just frustrating. Especially when you can't attribute it to them just having a bad day - because you're seeing them give other people WAY better service.

On the flip side of that, there have been times when they've found out we have the required 18% tip and have treated us amazingly (just like they would anyone else - and it shows, especially when you've gotten poor service before from the same place), and you'd better believe we left plenty more in tip than just the required 18%.

Those sound like awful customers, Siniri. Leaving a prayer card instead of a tip? Wow. That generally does the opposite of what they intended. The worst is indeed when someone skips out on their check/tab. At events, I always hold their credit card behind the bar when they want to run a tab. Lost count how many people have forgotten their card at the end of the night and left before closing out. That's a zero tip, of course, but at least I am not on the hook for their drinks. I have had a few times when a daytime customer skipped out on their lunch tab. (I do wait tables in the bar occasionally during a day shift - usually it is busy enough that they need to come up to the bar to order, but if its slow, I'll do the wait-staff thing). That's the worst because I cannot so easily make the food free and it cannot "disappear" from the POS. Fortunately, that happening is very infrequent.

I agree with everyone working in food service for even a little while. I have always tipped, but I tip far better now than I did before working in the service industry where tips are the majority of the income. I think of it as "good tip Karma."
