I have never been able to figure out why people feel important if they have a bunch of strangers they've never talked to on their friends list -- people can't even see the list for crying out loud.

I have plenty of friends on neopets but I never added them to my list. I think it would be weird to add everyone on there. If someone's my friend I know it and they know it, they don't have to be on a list.
