Ah, it's been a while. I've been kind of busy on my other forums; I'm quite sorry I haven't been around lately.

I made this topic to ask whether anyone else has been experiencing pop-ups on Neopets. They are very big and very annoying; they take up the whole screen with a little link at the bottom : 'Click here to close the window'. It must have something to do with the banner ads, but I wouldn't know because I have the code enabled that hides them.

Thank you for all your help.

I've also hidden the banners, but I'm not getting any popups.

Is it just Neopets? Maybe try running a spyware scan or two just in case :)

Gone, forever.

Its definitely not Neopets doing it intentionally, and if you havent already, you should report the popups to TNT with their content. Even if they're because of spyware or adware on your computer, they can at least look into it and be sure. I know that before I got premium, I had a few of popups that were directly related to the ads on the site. As in when the popup occured, an ad on the page was missing. Or the same things were being advertised in the banner ad and popup. They seemed to be taken care of pretty fast.

Like others posted, its a good idea to sweep your system for adware and spyware that might be doing it too. I personally use Webroot Spy Sweeper every few days.

A wee while ago, there was a specific ad that gave adware that gives you pop-ups.

For that particular, I found that Ad-Aware could not pick it up. However, running Spy-Bot seemed to work.

I suspect you might be experiencing something similar. I am not sure though. have a go running through anti-spyware programs.

It may not be an ad from neopets, it can also be from another site you may have visited. I don't believe that particular ad I mentioned beforehand is on anymore.

I have been getting them also.

They are not techincally pop ups or not like normal ones.
They are ads that make themselves bigger if your mouse goes anywhere near them.
One of the ones on neo i got the other day was a target one. That one just got big without me going near it and made me close.

I have spy bot and ad-aware and I am clean. It is definately the ads.

Target is not the only one.. but the only one i can remember right now :P

They are trying to be sneaky and say, oh it is not a pop up.. but it coveres everything up and you actually have to click it to get it to leave.
It is highly anoying.

I use Maxthon that blcoks most of the popups :)

If there are ANY popups, you can contact TNT. They're very strict on the no pop-ups rule :) They'll probably take it down.

Yes, it only happens on Neopets.

And I would contact them, but I'm not very Internet-savvy and I don't really know how to describe the ads accurately. I will, however, follow your advice and run a spyware scan. Thank you.

yeah, I;ve been getting them - they are awful. They are the banner ads on top of the neopets windows. They expand and over-write the rest of the window. So technically they are not "pop-ups" (because they are in the same window, not a new one), that's probably why Neopets lets them there.

If they come up when you are playing word pyramid, it causes IE to crash.
bye-bye game.

Glad I'm not the only one having IE crashes

As I understand it, neopets doesn't "let" them there, they specifically ban them. But they don't check all their advertisements themselves, they have some other company that does that for them. And that company sometimes lets things like this through.

I got bombarded with 5 of them the other day, and my browser shut off.

And DON'T say it's spyware. I've already gotten rid of it. It's called "Linspire 4.5".

DM, in your case I guess it's just a kind of overload? TNT really needs to hire some people to sift through the ads. I know, it would be a mind-numbing job, but after all, it is their site. And ultimately, I hold any site responsible for the ad content.

Yes, we can and should send in reports when ads are found that are pop-ups, these new take-over-the-whole-page kill your internet, or inappropriate ads. But it shouldn't be our "job" to have to keep sending in reports either.

Something interesting I noted last night. I do have premium, so no ads. But ... the pages were loading kind of slow (thought I hit a lag) and I was looking at the bottom of the page. a.tribalfusion.com was trying to load -- which is one of the ad companies, and once I refreshed the page it loaded immediately.
