THIS ACCOUNT HAS BEEN TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED.
You have been SUSPENDED for the following reason:
No matter what many people claim, no one has ever hacked into our site, accessed user information, accounts or usernames. The ONLY means by which a user can have an account stolen is when they inadvertently or intentionally give it away.
Your suspension will end in 4 hours and 28 minutes.
At that time you will be able to return to the site with your account and pets safely intact. Please make sure to read the Terms and Conditions and our NeoRules while you wait for your suspension to end. You are being given another chance here. Do not lose your account PERMANENTLY by breaking the rules in the future.
Isn't that unfair?

It's called damage control. Silence the problem to avoid hysteria. More importantly, in terms of a business, silence the problem to avoid potential clients thinking twice before signing up to sponsor.
We know that a monitors account was taken, we know other people's accounts have been taken. We've warned the public and the problem is being worked on as far as we can tell, time to sit back and hope it ends here.
Just be thankful you weren't ice, ice baby!

Anyone frozen/suspended for that too?
Its lame that neo tries to cover this up.
"No matter what many people claim, no one has ever hacked into our site, accessed user information, accounts or usernames. The ONLY means by which a user can have an account stolen is when they inadvertently or intentionally give it away. "
- 1. A neo moderater had been hacked
- 2. Famous neopians such as dogfriend2 and xxxx fell prey to CGers
-3. Everyone talks about cookiegrabbers on the boards
-4. Neo themselves have disable all petpages to prevent some Cgers..
So they know that "user information, accounts or usernames" could be "accessed" without "inadvertently or intentionally (giving) (the password) away."
So why suspend me? I am Fierywindz on neo. I will quit neo if they ever freeze my acc...
--------------------------------------
I know that i am lucky. I probably owe my lightened "punishment" by being such a good player who reports scammers etc....

Or the twitch of the moderater's consience. I feel like tracking down the neopets office in Singapore (I have no idea where it is @___@) and hijack it

I went and read the neorules out of curiosity, because I never rembered a rule specifically against saying something like that. This not numbered just printed under all the numbered rules...
"Keep in mind:
Contrary to what many people claim, no one has ever hacked into Neopets, accessed user information, accounts or usernames. The ONLY means by which a user can have an account stolen is when they inadvertently or intentionally gives away their password."
Then is says read about golden rules, security, etc.
Wow, I guess I didn't realize that was an offence! I heard people saying last night that their petpages with info on the mess kepting getting cleared...
Sorry about your Luck!

I am sure anyone who didn't know until reading your board loves you for it though!

Nobody's been iced for saying it, I ws exaggerating a bit

Just think of it this way, its 4 hours where you can't accidently click onto an on-site gookie grabber
And this wasn't a "hacking" of the site, a bug was found and exploited. It's different to hacking (though with the same results). People then inadvertantly fell trap by triggering a cookie grabber. They weren't hacked, they had their passwords stolen.
Like I said, it's technicalities that make their statement true. Just wait out your suspension and get angry at the people causing the problem, not the people swamped with the biggest problem since the fourth of April in 2004

What happened on 04/04/04 (Obviously having to do with the date). That was during my hiatus from neo. I know they mentioned it the last time people were avoiding neo, but since I cna't even remember what that was about, I don't remember what they said.

It is SUCH a loophole. They can still claim that Neopets has never been hacked and access was tricked out of people. Albiet a high tech trick, but still a trick. The mod situation might be better secribed as a trap, but no need to argue verb-age.
So PLEASE, if you insist on visiting and posting on the boards, use the correct verbage! Me? I will stay far far away from the boards.

I am not positive on the details, forgive me if I am wrong, but I believe there was a major glitch that resulted in many people's passwords revealed to the public.

I'm sorry. At least it was just a suspension. I believe a few people have been warned and/or suspended now. At least last night I saw a few while lurking on the BDC. Boards were also being deleted that were talking about it as monitors found them.
The same thing happened after that last cg incident a couple of weeks ago, dupe day and after 4/4. 4/4 I believe the only thing "officially" mentioned was that people should change their passwords often and not make them easy. After that the passwords have to have a mix of letters and numbers came into being. Yes, the 4/4 security "glitch" was that anyone requesting a lost password was directed to a page that had the user name, password and email instead of the lost word being sent via email to the user. That was a very bad weekend!

You're correct. The password reminder page revealed the password and email, IIRC, instead of sending out the email. A lot of high profile accounts were hacked.

What?!? That's outrageous!

I was full of sympthay for TNT before, but not now. Their site has some major problems that need fixing, but it is not the fault of the users'. We give Neopets our time, trust, pageviews, personal information, and money, and deserve a bit of respect back. Since when was it a rule that "You must only say nice things about Neopets, or else you may be frozen or suspended?"
Wed Jan 18, 2006 9:40 pm
Well, as far as what just happened with kao...I think TNT is right. That's not exactly hacking. The moderator fell for a scam.
At least, last I knew, the popular opinion was that cookie grabbers were still considered a scam, not a hack. It was still a trick. A dirty, rotten trick, but a trick none the less.
Had it been a hacker, we'd have all been in serious trouble.
And I thought that 4/04/04 thing was a glitch? I was on hiatus at the time (thank god, no one knew I existed). It's possible TNT was playing around with the system and screwed up the code somewhere. The 4 thing could just be coincidental.
Wed Jan 18, 2006 10:17 pm
You were suspended because TNT needs to keep this under wraps. Why? It's all fine for players to know about it and talk about it on fansites, but they can't let people go on talking about it on the site itself, think of all the trouble it'd cause. More people would likely try cookie grabbers, others would panic, many, many people would take a hiatus from the site...
It'd all just be very bad for them. It's a good thing they seem to only be suspending accounts.
Don't be mad at them for covering this up. Think of what would happen if they didn't...

Users would actually have some idea there was a problem and how to protect themselves instead of being CGed out of the blue?
I do understand why they want to cover this up, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't be mad at them. It's in their best interests to cover it up (their short-term best interests, at any rate.) It's in the players' best interests for word to get out.
I understand why they value their best interests over that of the players. That doesn't mean I have to like it.
And I think freezing/suspending people for mentioning problems on the site is absurd unless they explicitly put in their T&C something to the effect of: "It is a violation of the Terms and Conditions to mention problems with the site. We don't want our advertisers finding out, after all."
Of course, I also think visiting the Neoboards is courting suspension in and of itself.
Thu Jan 19, 2006 12:22 am
I'm not surprised at all, in fact, I think they're doing the right thing by coming down on people who overdramatize what happened. TNT weren't hacked. A moderator account was. BIG BIG BIG difference. If TNT itself was hacked, the person could have taken down all the pages, fiddled with the games, etc. It was just a regular user account like yours and mine, except the person was a moderator.
If a moderator on the message board I admin was hacked, and once the problem was fixed somebody began starting threads saying 'the boards were hacked!' then I'd swoop down on them and send off a stern PM, too.
There is no reason to spread false information to make the hysteria worse. Yes we need to be on our toes, but no, we do not need to spread panic.
