Making them spineless at close range just makes them ever more huggable  or maybe the spines are just retractable. Either way, I still think it is safe to hug the stuffing out of them.

I like the retractable idea. Makes Zafaras nice and snuggly when needed.

looks to me the spines are different in every one of the poses shown that have it.

My guess is they are supposed to have spines, but the person who did the basic template forgot to put them in.

So either the same artist or different ones that realized they need the spines drew them in manually. But then maybe some artists just fill in the picture without refering to the other poses.

the blue zafara is the only basic colour zafara that hasn't got spines... I though that basic colours were based in the same drawing and all what TNT did was changing the colour...

The island one lacks spines too.

But what if that one drawing for that pose is the one without the spines?

That's what I think happened, but instead of fixing the template, the artists have been drawing them in when they go to fill in the color.

Eidt:
Looks like from browsing all the colors in that pose there are at least two Zafara templates:

Template 1:

Template 2:

All petz done with template 1 have the propper spikes which includeds the colors:
red,yellow,green,brown, and rainbow

Template 2 has a more smooth tail notch when the tail transitions to a thinner size. But template 2 also lacks the spikes. Colors using template 2:
blue, Christmas, cloud, disco, electric, fire, ghost, gold, island, orange, pink, pirate, purple, shadow, sketch, silver, spotted, skunk, split, starry, strawberry, striped and white

Any colors not listed are ones that appear to have their own template.

Yes, there are a lot of zafaras without spines in the close rang pose, but I was talking about basic colours... red, green, yellow and blue. The blue zafara is the only one without spines.
But I think you are right, the spines seem to have been added when the artist were filling them in the colour

I did some further investigating through browsing all poses in neocolours.

Any spikes on template 2 pets appear to have been added customly as an afterthought. You can tell because the spikes are drawn differently on all of them.

My guess is template 2 was to base colors such as darigan, plush, and Christmas on so they can change the location or the placement of the spikes.

Somehow that template eneded up getting mixed in with the template for the basic colors.

It could be that at some time someone took it off the server and accidentally placed it in the wrong folder.

You can compare here:

I think spines should start near the chest, just like in the disco zafara Image
