Interesting Discovery...

Tue Oct 11, 2005 12:41 am

While waiting for a page to load in the repository (which is very short for me :D ) I happened to look down at the status bar to see what was loading. Something flashed by and caught my eye, so I clicked on my handy dandy adblock tab to see what it could have been. Upon doing so, I discovered this:

http://vianeopets.112.2o7.net/b/ss/vian ... r=39317961

What the heck is that? And why does it have "EMAIL" in the url? Are the pages I'm visiting being e-mailed to some server?

I blocked it, and it doesn't seem to affect anything on the page fortunately, so.... But I find it strange.

I saw the same thing also, and it greatly disturbed me. All I can say is clear your Cookies just to be sure, as I did.

It could be some kind of ad thing... or a stats thing... or maybe it has something to do with the "points" we're supposedly earning in the plot. I wonder how they're keeping track of those.

If you notice the main domain is 2o7.net, it is owned by Omniture a company I know quite a few people who work for here is what they have to say...

Officially from Omniture:

What is 2o7.net?
2o7.net is an Internet domain used by Omniture, Inc. on behalf of our customers to improve Web site design and to generally improve the user experience on the Web. This domain is used by Omniture’s data collection systems, and is the domain under which Omniture places cookies. These cookies are NOT spyware – they are simple text files that help Omniture customers measure usage of their Web sites and performance of their marketing campaigns.

From friends:

Go to 2o7.net and you can opt-out of this 'Cookie'.

The product they are using is called Omniture SiteCatalyst. You can take a tour HereThe only thing that it really does is helps track where you go on the site, how long you are on the site, what site, if any, you came from and when you leave Neopets where you go. There is no personal information that is stored or transmitted. This information is then used to create a generalized reports (NO IP information is displayed, only who you get internet from) that Neopets uses to show potential investors or Advertisers.

Since numbers from Neopets own reports can be fudged, it is always best to have a third party monitor your site, especially if you are getting more than 10,000 users per day.

I hope that explains a few things. There are many companies that use this service such as MSN, Toyota, Ebay and many many others.[/url]

Bleh, I don't much care for that. Thanks for the info, it's interesting stuff.

I went to the site and opted out of the tracking cookie and ironically I had to agree to let them install a cookie that would prevent them from installing the tracking cookie.
