Insisting on a negative sign is absolutely ludicrous. When people actually took the time to figure out the equation for it and calculate it, they should be rewarded.

I think a negative sign is already implied when they ask for the "deflection" of the beam. I set up my coordinate system saying positive deflections were down ...

Whoever made this Lenny Connundrum is just trying to make themselves feel smug for asking such a "hard" one. I think they were surprised that so many people were able to do the math ... so they had to figure out a way to make it look like it was harder than it actually was. So, they made it such that only *32* people could get it "right" by insisting on a controversial negative sign.

This was hard LC ... I liked it alot. But if they aren't going to reward all the people who actually figured it out, then it completely smurfs. (yes, I used the word that describes a small blue thing there on purpose)

Sour Grapes? Sure. Justified ... I think so. Your opinion may vary.

P.S. I see all the "Neopian Structural Engineering" that are in the trading post are people from the 'www.neoholic.com' guild. Interesting.

P.P.S. With only 32 of those books in Neopia ... that makes the prize worth millions of Neopoints. Conspiracy? :) I see they are all asking for exactly the same thing, as well. BOO HISS.

Well, it's like here, people on PPT help each other out. Except the people there may have helped each other slightly more.. lol.

Don't get me wrong ... I think hints are fine. I enjoy trying to think of clever hints to help people out.

The more "interesting" part was they were all getting this mysterious negative sign.

Just (mostly) joking around ... but I did think it was an interesting observation. :)

*feels sick to stomach* :o
are you kidding? I didn't put the negative sign...
after all that work...
TNT must really be trying to crack our spirits these days, do you think they're breaking us down so they can brainwash us when we're at our worst?
it's what they do in cults...
*runs to barf*

I agree and disagree with you, Setekh. :)

I do agree. -1.1 and 1.1 are different numbers.

I disagree that -1.1 is a more valid answer to this question than 1.1, though. Since they ask "How much will the beam deflect?" ... a magnitude of a deflection is implied. They did not specify the coordinate system they wanted us to use in any way ... so there is no way one can know whether to call it -1.1 or 1.1 inches. Both are equally valid answers.

I've read stories about TNT flat out miscalculating the answer ... and that would have been an even bigger dissappointment. :) At least I can take comfort knowing that I theoretically did get a correct answer on this one.

But ... as I did state ... it is partially sour grapes because I didn't have a minus sign. Insisting on the minus sign does nothing but make the people who actually figured it out frustrated with the LC.

I'm sure the 32 people who are now millions of neopoints richer are very happy they "decided" to put a minus sign on their answer. :)

I'm sure a ton more people would have gotten the prize if they would have allowed 1.1 :) oh well next time

Me and my dad spent 2 hours on this. I entered 1.1 inches.

And I missed it. Crazy. Crazy.

Why do you need a negative sign anyway? It doesnt bend -1.1 inches.. that would be going up. It beds 1.1 inches.

I really can't believe this one.
