Has anyone signed up for the 15 day trial? I have. it's ok, but nothing anymore amazing than hotmail, which is free.... so i wont pay for it!!

Edit: Oh and anyone that does know about it, do you know if they're going to make the portal and toolbar part of the premium thingy once it's all up and running?

I just found them, no way am I signing up. I'm not giving my credit card information for a 15 day trial. They'll get the hint when no one lasts longer than the trial.

I agree that they have -- it's finally revealed that the portal is a paid only benefit. I still have access to it as a tester (at least the alpha version -- the paid one has a little bit, but not much more), but I don't see it as something worth anything. It should be free to those who want to use it in my opinion.

Their dial-up service is a bit of a joke with most people going broadband nowadays (and I believe there are some providers that are cheaper than what they have with similar benefits)

Whenever something has a "free" trial but then charges a fee when the trial time is over will ask for name, phone, address and credit card information. That way, they can start automatically charging you. The problem I have had with other "trial" times is even calling then writing to cancel is that whatever it was did not cancel, I ended up being charged and having to fight with the place providing the service and sending copies of letters to my credit card company proving that I did in fact cancel before the trial time was over.

Given that most of us have an ISP that provides email with our paid service and that there are other web based emails that are free, I don't really see the point of this email service. I mean, how many people who don't play on the site are going to go sign up for the email? Especially at (I think) $4 U.S. a month? And just how many under 18 year olds do they think have a credit card? Or are younger ones just supposed to take mom or dad's card to sign up?

I don't personally trust any web based email service security wise. Too many people have had experiences with hotmail and yahoo (in particular) being "cracked" and I've been told that it's very easy to do. Adding a specific email to the site will just encourage scammers to try to find a way into the email and then your account. And given the glitches, downtimes and security problems that have occurred, would I in particular trust their own email? I don't think so.

Technically they can still say the site is free. This is something connected to the site, but is not within the site. Did that make sense? Kind of like the cell phone game or any other merchandise that's branded.

I think from what I've read the portal and toolbar will work without the neomail. But like the potential for problems with the email service, one of the things I don't like about the portal is it shows your pets, np, nf, etc. If someone gets hold of your pass and goes to the portal, they've got way too much information way too easily. I know, if you're going to be scammed or hacked they'll go look in your bank, etc., but now they don't even have to go that far to see if your account is "worth" stealing.

if you comment that it's no longer a free service they'll just say that the stuff you have to pay for is all optional.

As for paying for any of it, nope! not happening! there's nothing on the toolbar that would make me pay for it, as there's nothing that a combination of the *free* google toolbar, the links toolbar and my favorites can't do that it can. I have to say the portal has grown on me, but once again it's not worth paying for.

I wonder how long the testers will keep access to the portal/toolbar....?

Lastly, you dont need to give them your credit card details for the neomail trial, i didnt. You also dont get the av they advertise that you get for getting the trial, but i did get the 2500np.

Another point on the webmail is that having @neomail.com as your email address is only really going to mean something to people that play neopets, and if someone plays neopets you can neomail them. so it doesnt really make much sence, since as you pointed out there are so many free webmail places around.

I can also see a host of scams happening with the introduction of the neomail, as some people might not know about it, and if someone signed up with an account name and emailed some (guillable admittedly) people pretending to be someone on the neopets staff it's just a whole load more terrible scams waiting to happen.

I dont think this is much different to not having the portal you know. you need to log in on neopets before you can see the portal, so you may as well go to a neopets page (within the site) rather than the portal, doesnt say much difference. it does tell you all that info, but you can switch off most of the options that display personal info.

You know what really bugs me though?

Making many things America advantaged. We in the UK aren't likely to carry around US dollars, are we?

Or have america phones that can download games.

Or get our hands on merchendice without playing like £40 on ebay (although maybe there is shops that sell, I'm not sure, but I've never seen one anywhere. Confirmation?).

Or get neopets mcdonalds plushies.

Wait, Rune, I just read your post. The portal is going to be for pay too? :o Looks through the magazine and the 1 page article about the portal/toolbar.

It says nothing about the email at all or the portal being for pay. And they're going to be offering a dial up service? Says nothing about that either. I am one of the few? on dial up, I simply cannot afford the cost of faster connection.

Wow, sounds like Neopets wants to become an ISP now! This is going too far...

r4chel, the potential for scamming using the neo email is a valid concern and one that a few people have brought up. I mean people are already "spoofing" the neopets email, writing official-looking emails that ask for all your information. So I agree there is a great potential for abuse. As far as being gullible, well yes, you would be for falling for email scams, but if you don't know about them and get an "official" email with a link, so many people wouldn't take the time to go Wait A Minute! - they kind of panic and rush to save their accounts. Same with the spoof of ebay and paypal (which is obviously much more serious). Another reason to loathe that type of scammer. Doing this with Neopets is almost like "training" for real world type scamming.

The article I just read doesn't say anything about being able to change any information on the portal page, just on the toolbar..."You can even modify the Toolbar to your own personal taste, by adding and subtracting links to all your favorite Neopian places!"

jelly -- I do agree, there doesn't seem to be as much or enough being released outside the US (and some things in Canada). If you want the email, plushies, cards, whatever, you should be able to get them without having to spend a fortune on ebay (mainly shipping!).

Oh well, I will not be taking advantage of any of these "perks", as I don't want to be taken advantage of!

I think it's horrible that they're beginning to charge you for things. Even if you aren't obligated to sign up for those, it's kind of attracting people to pay for it because it's Neopets...
And the fact that 'paid-users' (IMO) get special random events and better items than other users is simply put, unfair.
I wouldn't be surprised, in fact, if pretty soon you can pay for an advanced Neopets.com account

(I'm sorry if I offended you about the broadband comment... it prolly didn't come out the right way ^^;; )

http://premium.neopets.com/portal.aspx

Unlike the Toolbar that mention it's free -- this is clearly a main part of their paid-only features. I believe that they didn't mention it in the magazine is to drag in the younger users, once they notice that these are paid only services, they'll beg their parents to buy it for them (how suscessful may vary)

For the reccord -- it looks like their ISP is a branded service (it's connected to Another ISP)
