I've been planning an article about the origins of Neopets' names (for example, Gelert from the Arthurian legends and JubJub and Wocky from Jabberwocky). I'll be researching this myself, but I was wondering if anyone here had discovered any. :)

Buzz: Quite obvious, insects buzz

Bori: To me, this one sounds like burrowing or a similar word, and Bori's like to dig.

Kougra: Based off of cougar, I guess.

Grarrl: Name sounds like a growl or a roar, and it's a dinosaur, which supposedly would make those sorts of noises.

Krawk = "croc" in Australian. :P
Lupe = means wolf in French. So that's pretty straightforward.
Kau, Elephante, Koi = all come from the animals they're based on.
Flotsam & Jetsam = are real words! From dictionary.com: In maritime law, flotsam applies to wreckage or cargo left floating on the sea after a shipwreck. Jetsam applies to cargo or equipment thrown overboard from a ship in distress and either sunk or washed ashore. The common phrase flotsam and jetsam is now used loosely to describe any objects found floating or washed ashore.

Flotsam - Wreckage or cargo that remains afloat after a ship has sunk.

Jetsam - Cargo or equipment thrown overboard to lighten a ship in distress. (The common phrase flotsam and jetsam is now used loosely to describe any objects found floating or washed ashore.)

Draik - Close to "draco," meaning "serpent" or "dragon" -- obviously intentional. Also close to "drake," but that's a male duck rather than a dragon.

Eyrie - Variant of "aerie": The nest of a bird, such as an eagle, built on a cliff or other high place.

Koi - Japanese fish.

Lupe - From the latin "lupus," meaning "wolf."

Uni - From "unicorn."

Pteri : from Pterodactyl, a flying dinosaur-thingy.

Kougra : from "cougar"

Scorchio : It "scorches" you with it's heat.

Mynci : from "Monkey"

Techo : a "technological gecko"?

It could be based on borings, or holes made through precise diggings.

Wow, I never knew there were so many references to so many pet names!

The only one I can think of is usul - that's the name of a main character in the Dune books by Frank Herbert, and chia - but that one's obvious ... cha cha chia! chia pets
