Excellent point, Cranberry. I think it would be very interesting to try the experiment as you've set it up, and I do like the idea of indirectly asking people to be generous. The other upside is that, once you get into UB territory, people are often willing to accept a slightly low offer.

When I checked the trades this morning you were up to 115k. Congratulations, that is pretty awesome!

I can't remember who said it, but it would be an equally good experiment to start with a cheap, cheap thing and offer it on something worth slightly more. The person may just be willing to get rid of it and get something new to try with, whatever. The point is, that yes, you would be actively searching, doing the legwork yourself.

I would like to know how much of how far you have got is down to Pink pt members 'helping' though.

Thanks Rachel!

I have to agree with Cranberry and TWW on this.

The point of this is not genorosity of others, but the real point of an experiment like this would be to test your luck and trading prowess.

And that's precisely what my experiment is testing. I'm not putting junk out there hoping someone will bid more; I'm bidding less valuable stuff to see what I can get people to accept. So far, no bites, but I'll keep people informed of my progress since some people expressed interest.

I'm not trying to knock what jrtman's doing though. Maybe we can look at my experiment as a control for his (I don't know who suggested that, but it was a good idea). Of course, to be a relevant control, I guess I should go get a meowclops pen and start with that... [siniri darts over to the shop wiz]

I'm pretty sure Kyle from one red paperclip fame traded his first item and each item afterwards to people who found the project on his website, and not by searching out the people himself. I set out to see if what Kyle did would work on Neopets, just as it did in real life.

I like what Siniri is doing because like she said, it's kind of a control to mine, just as long as she is using a Black Meowclops Pen to start out with.

I don't know whether it's this new discussion or what but I haven't had any new offers on the Transmogrification potion.

I get what people are saying about the advertising, but I really didn't go into this trying to see if random people would offer me more valuable items for the heck of it. I wanted to create an experiment that would mimic one red paperclip as closely as I could, and going over and reading the website again I'm pretty sure I did that.

Want a Fire Drackonack? It's the latest trade, ending a horrendous 6 day dry spell. You can find the trade here and the updated petpage here.

If the mods have any problem with this double post I'll gladly merge the two; I just don't want anybody thinking that I left everyone who participated.

I'd prefer if you merged the posts... but oh look i'm posting.

It's an interesting idea. I wouldn't mind trying something simmilar one day, but man. Thats crazy. It takes a lot of wheeling and dealing sometimes. And I hope you don't give up.

You're going to have a hard time getting rid of that Fire Drackonack. Before now, the trades were probably pretty cheap, so it didn't cost much for people to be generous. However, you're now getting into the VERY hard to sell category, where it would cost people upwards of 10-20K to be generous. My suggestion would be to take a slight loss on this one and try to get something more useful, because painted petpets are the hardest thing to sell EVER.

I beg to differ! It is my firmly held belief that (TCG) cards are the most hard to sell little beasties out there.

PS - Please visit my store, the Moonlight Petpet Ranch, for all your painted petpet needs.

My advice would be not to get too much more "specialized" beyond this trade, if you can help it. Most people won't shell out lots of NP for a painted petpet (or TCG card, etc), unless they are specifically looking for one. You should accept items that are in higher demand/more sought after. Or try to...I suspect it will only get more difficult. Altho, to be honest, if I had a use for it I would be trading for that drackonack lol ;)

Well, you have average a gain of roughly 10000 NP per trade... some people are really generous... you gained over 100k in less than two weeks. I might consider offering my Spirkle if you get something a little better.

Well, here's an update (or non-update) on my control experiment. I have one black meowclops pen and bid it against something worth a little more (actually, I've done this twice). My bid was neither rejected nor accepted -- rather, it was completely ignored. When I clicked on the user look-ups, neither user had logged on in the past 14 days. So why did they start a trade if they weren't even going to check for bids? Unless they were kids and got grounded. :P I sometimes forget that many neopets users are children...

Now that I'm caught up in Altador, I'm going to buy a few more meowclops pens and start bidding on other items in earnest. I'll give the trader 24-48h to accept or reject, and then I'll withdraw my bid and move on to something else.

I've been a bit preoccupied with other "real world" things as of late and have cut down on the amount of time I've been spending on the internet for the time being.

No "non-junk" offers on the Fire Drackonack as of yet even though I love the little guy. I might just buy another one and give it to one of my pets -- but then, I'm kind of holding out for the PPL award.

On a really side-tracked note: Did anyone see the series finale of Justice League Unlimited? Friggin' sweet, although it's sad to see the end of a legacy.

Back on subject; it looks like more and more people are starting to create their own versions of the experiment...

I've been off 3 days? I could have swore it was only 24 hours. Sheesh, time flies, huh?

As an update I haven't received any offers yet, which is surprising to me. As a way to reverse this weirdness I'm going to accept any offer above 105,000 as long as it's an easier item to get offers on.

I've gotten a few Neomails saying that since this experiment is known about, it isn't a real experiment. When I created this experiment I did so with One Red Paperclip in mind. ORP not only has a website dedicated to it, but has also received major media coverage over the time it has been up so I think it's safe to say my experiment follows it pretty well.

There are others trying this without public knowledge, so that base is covered as well.

Edit: I have an offer of a Golden Coco Stamp but I'm a bit leary on this one because I've had some trouble with stamps in the past. If anybody is looking for this item I'll accept, otherwise I'm going to have to reject.
