Just so you know, it's even more inappropriate than the one that started this whole thread....be warned.

I remeber a really bad one. the one where you shoot the bunny. and it actually SHOOTS THE BUNNY. that was really bad

I've seen ads for condoms and the like. This is WAY out of hand. :o

Sun May 08, 2005 6:15 pm

The ads are being sent in batches and a simple run through of all the ads before they're coded in would solve the problem, wouldn't it?

I suppose thats there are legal constraints though, nothing is as easy as that.

If there are legal constraints, then they should be on the side of caution. If Neopets actually negotiated an ad contract that included the inability of neopets to remove ads from the cycle unless they were told by their users that they were inappropriate, then that's a huge case of idiocy on their part, and shows that they don't deserve ANY ad revenue, let alone revenue from companies that have no business advertising on child-friendly websites.

Why is this turning into an "I hate Neopets" thread? neopets do not have any control about the adverts that go on their site, so I do not know why you are all talking about why Neopets are doing so badly. Why not, instead of moaning, do ecxactly what Neopets says?

Banner Ad Feedback

If you have come across an ad that:

- you feel is offensive or inappropriate for the site.
- is not loading properly or if there is some other noticeable problem with it.

Then please send an e-mail to mailto:adreport@neopets.com

It is important to include the following in the e-mail so that we can investigate and resolve your issue.

* reason(s) why you found this ad offensive or what problem(s) the ad is having on your web browser.
* the source code of the page
- you can attain this by right clicking on the page and selecting "view source" or "view page source" or by finding those options by selecting "view" at the top menu of your browser.
* a screenshot of the ad you are complaining about.

We greatly value the opinions and feedback from our users.

Thank you!

The point being that -- since Neopets is not just a page put up free on someone else's server -- Neopets does have control over the adverts. For years, as you'll recall, they didn't allow any banner ads at all. Then they decided to sell that ad space. And they contracted with people to put ads there.

If, in that contract, Neopets gave up all control over which ads go on, then that was an incredibly stupid choice. And if they did not, then they still have control about the adverts that go on their site.

(Note that in the above, "Neopets" refers not so much to the hard-working TNT and, in particular, Adam & Donna, but rather to Doug Dohring and the corporate side, the business folk and lawyers.)

This is exactly what I did. I posted the response I got. As a result of my (and most likely others) emails, they were working to remove that particular ad.

People do have the right to be annoyed by it, though. Thus the discussion about it.

I do think it is strange that ads like this can even appear in the first place ... I would have thought that they would have a chance to "pick" the ads that display.

It seems like a totally lame contract and really weird if that they didn't insist that they could "censor" certain ads from showing up on the site. *OR*, they didn't go through a company that actually screened ads for content before sending them out. Shouldn't they be worried about that?

Four words - q cnet dot com

I have been getting inappropriate ads (even on Mozilla - it takes about 15 odd minutes for the program to work it out I've blocked that particular advert) as well as a rather rocky RSing evening tonight.

1 in 3 refreshes comes up blank. It loads images from neopets.com...and then says "transferring data from q cnet dot com" - blank page. Nothing comes up at all. I hit refresh, same deal. I literally have to go and kill the page and reload it to get -anywhere-.

It's also being a right -removed- on the haggle screen. Hurts when you have a r99 in your scope and BOOM, blank page disease.

I hope whoever signed these ads as part of Neopets.com gets a firm boot up the tail. This advert mess is getting annoying to have to deal with >>;

Yoshi edit: Please don't evade the filters. This includes using asteriks- even if you don't mean to be using inappropriate language, asteriks imply it.

There was another ad from the same company that was "busting at the seams" that I had earlier reported (the "sexy and single" "chat now" company). This new ad was showing up at the bottom of the pages yesterday.

I sent the page source and screen shot to TNT (as they request), and I was happy to receive a speedy reply from them once again. They take the inappropriate advertisements quite seriously it seems.

Glad to see this got corrected. It is too bad they can't pre-screen those ads. It sounds like a good start by removing that particular ad agency.

Email from TNT below ... name editted out. 2 emails from real people at TNT within a month. I feel so special. :)

Hi,

Thanks for reporting this. I have been told that this ad has been removed
(as of this morning) and also that the advertising network that was
providing this ad has also been removed as one of the companies we are
working with. We are sorry that this ad was appearing and we hope that by
removing the ad network that we can prevent this and/or similar ads from
appearing again.

Thanks,

I was on the phone with Neopets' legal department last night about this very subject, and what ad should come up but one for birth control. Including the words "sex life". Needless to say, they heard about it :P
